ABC RADIO Country KTYS (THE TWISTER)/DALLAS mid-day guy SCOTT GAINES has left the station. He is on the prowl for his next gig and can be reached at (214) 417-5150 or [email protected].

What's Up????

Re: Chulo

Perhaps Scott, the former "Chulo" on Wild 100, could head to Seattle for a homecoming with Fitz. Nah, nice guy...wouldn't wish that on ANYBODY. So whatever happened with Scott and his bariatric surgery? He had Channel 5 tracking his progress, and when I saw him a year ago, he'd already knocked some weight off. Bet he's like KVIL these days, a shell of his former self!

If he's "on the prowl," he obviously got fired. Probably making too much money and was a load on the ABC bottom line (looks bad for those potential buyers.) Remember that, when they hired him away from 100.3, he had some listeners and someone actualy thought at that time that the Twister might actually do or be something---so negotiating a decent salary for him then might not have been too hard. Of course, too, ABC might could even sell off a few of their non-performers separately from the "big deal," which means having to make the Twister APPEAR to have a bottom line that's not red.

They need to do something with their signal, no wonder the Wolf is kicking their butt!!

How about turn off the transmitter? The signal is the least of their problems.

ABC doesn't wanna spend the cash required to make them a winner. They're content fielding a small-market station in a major market. Spend as little as you can, take a handful of listeners from The Wolf and beam proudly when you've accomplished your half-assed goal. "So what if we can't place higher than 27th, we knocked The Wolf down a tenth."

Unfortunately The Wolf is still kicking KSCS's ass so why not save even more money and turn out the lights?

The Twister can play 20 in a row because nobody's buying. I could probably buy a spot on The Twister with the lint I have in my pants pockets. Throw in a little more and I can combo ESPNRadio in there.

Horrid, whiny imaging, a lackluster staff with little credibility not counting Jeremy, and a terrible signal. Trifecta for failure. Anybody else wanna borrow the soapbox before I put it away?

Call me crazy, but I enjoy the Twister. I like hearing the new stuff nobody else is playing, and I like the imaging too. I love CHR sounding country stations and hope that smaller markets pick up on them. I get to Fort Worth often and I'm always listening to 96.7 as soon as I can pick it up around Greenville.

Here here! Ratings aren't everything. If that were the case how come a station like Radio Disney (which hardly shows up in Arbitron anywhere) is able to generate a number one, multi-platnium artist such as Hillary Duff with virtually no airplay on any other station in America.

And I honestly can't seem to figure out "bluescreen". Do you have an axe to grind sir? I mean you can tell us if they bypassed you when they were putting together an airstaff. And I know, I know...you're "part time" by choice at some "other" station. But I've been following this board for a while and all it seems you do (more than anyone else) is ridicule KTYS into the ground...EXCEPT for Mr. Robinson. Friends with him? Are you him? You've been squeezing into your Nostradamus cap for quite some time proclaiming the end of that station but so far...nothing.

But one thing this station has succeeded in is getting under your skin, that we all have figured out.

Touche. First off, I have no axe to grind. I didn't apply at The Twister. I'll admit I thought about, but in retrospect I'm glad I didn't do it. As for Jeremy, I know him but I am not him. He sounds good on The Twister, and he's the only current jock on that staff that has worked for a highly rated station in DFW. If he can help their ratings then bully for him!

I dunno about you but I was just as elated as everyone else was when ABC signed them on. I'd hoped they would put together a serious effort to shake up the market, but they didn't. Instead they went with a lowest-common-denominator strategy of investing as little as possible in the station in order to take a little away from The Wolf to benefit KSCS. Has it happened? In my opinion, no. They've hovered right around 25th both 12+ and 25-54. The Wolf has had a couple down books but for the most part they're still in firm control of the war.

I've pounded The Twister fairly mercilessly, you're right - and deservedly so - but I have also given them their props. Loren and Crash have musically positioned the station fairly well but the rest of the package is small market at best, and that's the reason they've gotten under my skin. Negative imaging irritates the hell out of me especially when your bag is as empty as theirs is. Just play the damn music. All you do when you mention The Wolf every 10 minutes is sound desperate and more or less admit you're getting your ass reamed by them. Plus, listeners don't wanna hear it.

The bottom line is this is market #5, not Wichita Falls. Unlike others on the board (perhaps ABC folks) I'm unwilling to accept mediocrity and that's what The Twister is. I'll honestly admit I'd hoped they'd be gone by now and I've been wrong so far, but if Wolf continues to plow KSCS, local management isn't going to be able to justify Twister's existence much longer. Maybe they can move the tower 30-40 miles further to the northwest and actually serve Wichita Falls, where they can compete.

IMNSHO, I believe Radio Disney could outperform The Twister if they were on 96.7 and for the bean counters it'd be an even cheaper alternative.

Re: Damn you for your honesty

Perhaps the biggest irritation to me on this board is when someone throws up the "jealousy" card when someone else is on a tear about a station or personality. I tip my hat to you for not wallowing in the mud with someone who obviously had you mistaken. Sure, I realize this is a highly-competitive biz, and that an inflated ego goes hand-in-hand with success for a lot of people, and I'd guess some of the folks who got stepped on along the way happen to lurk here. BUT...just because I speak out about an issue, be it Russ Martin or Dan Bennett or Mark Davis or KVIL or whoever, that doesn't imply that I want their show or station, I could do it better, I'm God's gift to radio and not them, and that I should be celebrated and honored for making bad career moves. You simply aren't allowed here to dislike something or someone in radio without it being rooted in jealousy. But it's nothing more than just another opinion, the way I see it, and calling it as one sees it. If I wouldn't see enough commonality to have a Russ Martin or a Mark Davis as a friend, I probably wouldn't allow much time for listening to their blather on the air either. There's just not a deeper motive here to unearth, I don't dwell on it, I don't lose sleep over it, I don't focus a lot of energy on it, etc. You just like 'em or you don't. Why is there something so wrong with not preferring what some others prefer?
