Two Big Sports Rights News (8/10)

They do not involved any of the big four but they might foretell how the competition would stick up in the next four years.

First, IndyCar re-upped its deal with ABC/ESPN to continue to give ABC exclusive rights to air IndyCar racing on network TV, including the Indy 500, until 2018:

IndyCar's current deal with NBC/Comcast also expires in 2018.

In another piece of news, what may look inconsequential on first look but could potentially change the new rivalry between the network, NBC Sports and MLS announced a new three-year deal to air 45 games on either NBC or the new NBC Sports Network. These games will include 6 games involving the US Men's National Team (2 on NBC and 4 on NBCSN).

This is the package that is now currently on FSC. NBC Sports has basically outbid Fox for it. The deal will start in 2012 and end in 2014. This would give NBCSN some summertime programming to go with NHL programming in the fall and winter.

First off, let's not equate MLS with The Barclay's Premier League in England or Serie A in Italy , or even the Bundesliga in Germany or even Central/South American socc---um, football.

MLS is a second tier league, light years behind those leagues. Aside from Seattle/Portland and an occasional large crowd in Los Angeles..who would cheer anyone playing "the beautiful game", pro soccer in the U S will always be at least 6th behind the big four and Nascar.

I'm more anxious to see how NBC Sports Network will utilize the various CSN (Comcast Sports Networks) as well as SNY in New York on a more national basis.

FSC may as well go back to their original Fox Sports World branding if they start losing out on soccer packages...

Just as soon as it dawns on them that nobody will pay extra to have Fox Soccer Plus as well

Or National Fox Sports Net Channel or Sporting News one to complete with ESPNNEWS. Know ESPNU has a new Daytime Schedule including a show with Jesse Palmer.

They still have the Champions League, as well as the BPL. Fox might fill in content in the summer time with USL and WPS. Still, I think Fox will want to keep their two biggest properties, occasionally selling ESPN a weekly BPL game whenever there's space for it. Then there are the international matches, including qualification for the next World Cup.

What about the other soccer channel, GolTV HD I think its called. Not sure what rights they have that differ from FOX Soccer and FOX Soccer Plus.

GolTV has La Liga (certain matches are sub-licensed to ESPN Deportes or sometimes ESPN2 during the final weeks of the season, like if Real and Barcelona are playing at the same time), the Bundesliga, the Brazilian league, the Colombian league and Europa League.

FOX Soccer airs the EPL, Concacaf Champions League, UEFA Champions League, some matches from MLS, WPS, United Soccer Leagues, certain matches from the US Men's National team and Serie A.

FOX Soccer Plus airs the nPower Championship League (that's the level just below the EPL), Ligue 1 (French league), F.A. Cup, English League Cup, certain matches from the UEFA Champions League, rugby matches such as the Magners League, some matches from the EPL and Serie A.

The MLS games and US National team games on FOX Soccer will go to NBC Sports next year. ESPN and Univision have their own deals with MLS and those will continue until 2014 (same year as the NBC deal).

The IRL.....uh, IndyCar (whatever) is virtually invisible.

Well, Will Power made it a little more visible with his "twin bird salute" yesterday...

Wow, the ink has barely been dry on their new MLS contract and NBC already has made an ad for next season!

Fox Sports and the UFC may have been quicker, as they had short interstial promos for 'UFC on Fox' air during this last week's/last weekend's NFL preseason telecasts. The deal was first made public two Thursdays ago.
