Looks like Rick And Bubba got mornings on Kicks 104 & Gospel returns to 660 AM WDLT.

Sure would like DLT to pick up WAITT's Rhythmic Oldies format. Oh well, one could only wish ::)
 
So, WDLT is simulcasting WGOK. WDLT has the better daytime signal while WGOK has the better nighttime. I assume the simulcast is just temporary until they find a new format for WDLT? There's just too much daytime overlap to keep the same black gospel format on both signals. I'd like to see Scott Shannon's oldies format end up on 660.

Good to see Rick and Bubba finally cracked that market. That puts them in the 4 major cities in Alabama now plus about 30 others!
 
Of course this is Rick and Bubba's third try in Mobile. First on WBUB 104.9 then on WYCL 107.3. WBUB dropped them when they moved to the more powerful WYCL, a sign that they must have been doing well. Later WYCL dropped them when they tried a local morning show. Does anyone know how well R&B did on those stations?
Will the new affiliation with Kicks cause R&B to loose their spots on some of the small town stations in the northern part of 104.1's coverage area?
 
I figured this was a recent addition, as I figure I'd have read/heard about it sooner. I stumbled upon the show Monday morning.

You sure it's just their third try? I thought they had a short stint on WABB 1480 once.

I'm not sure they'd 'kick' any of the smaller affiliates to the curb (especially if they pay for the show and/or clear the networks commercials). Though to your point, they aren't needed as much now. From Monroeville, I can hear the diabetic duo on Jackson's WHOD 94.5, Linden's WINL 98.5, Mobile's WYOK 104.1 (now), WPFL 105.1 of Century, FL/Flomaton, AL, and WFXX 107.7 of Georgiana.

WHOD and WPFL were the closest 'Mobile' affiliates before signing WYOK.

Clearly a cost-cutting move. But you're right, 'True Oldies' would be different, and it'd likely be cheap since it's coming off the bird. What about jazz? Mobile has no fulltime jazz station, does it?
 
True Oldies would be a good choice. Most satellite jazz networks will not allow their programming on AM. (At least it used to be that way)

Mobile's NPR, WHIL 91.3, has Jazz every evening with that Catt guy. I believe he has a big following and gives most Mobilians the Jazz fix they need so badly.
Destin, Panama City and Tallahassee all have commercial Jazz stations that are doing fairly well. I can't remember there ever being one in Mobile. Actually, I can't think of a commercial Jazz station in Alabama.
 
I really do like the suggestion of having a full-time Smooth Jazz station in theMobile/Pensacola Area.

Here's What I ThinkShould Happen:

I don't listen to the station, so my info might be several years old, but doesn't 93 'BLX call themselves "The Beat of The Bay"? Both Mobile and Pensacola (and Biloxi and Fort Walton for that matter) have bays, so there's no reason to mention which bay in a station's slogan.

Before WYOK flipped to Country they were running a Jazz show on Sundays. Many people speculated that they would be flipping to Jazz, but it didn't happen. It does seem like Jazz would be a better fit into the Cumulus urban lineup than Country. They could mimic Radio One's successful cluster in Atlanta.

I still can't figure out why Cumulus hasn't put their #2 station, WDLT-FM, on one of their under performing 100kw signals.

I also remember reading in the local media that Cumulus made an agreement to purchase WAVH 106.5, which could have become a Jazz station for Mobile. But the sale dragged out in court for a very long time and Cumulus backed out of the deal. I think Cumulus even got sued for backing out of the deal, so they must not be interested in adding to the Mobile cluster.

Whenever (if ever) a jazz/smooth jazz format gets tried in Mobile, you can bet that it won't be on a big stick (or, the primary signal for a big stick--an HD2 subchannel wouldn't be out of the question).

And speaking to poledo's last few posts--I'm not surprised that Cumulus hasn't moved WDLT to 100.7 or 104.1. It'd definitely help the R&B-starved masses north of Mobile & Baldwin County. They'd definitely enjoy a cume uptick. But our (folks up north) listening doesn't really count when it comes to the ratings. They 'do fine' where it counts--Mobile-area listeners turning their dials to 98.3.

More importantly, the real money fight still comes with the ad-buys to the suburban audiences who'd listen to 95-KSJ or Lite Mix 99.9. Cumulus can't just give up on chasing those dollars--hence why Q keeps getting tweaked (though mostly for Pensacola and Baldwin listeners), and why WYOK has gone from hot AC to 80s to CHR to country since Cumulus took it over in 1999/2000.

CC's success with KSJ, Lite, and The Rocket + Cumulus' urban domination with 'BLX, 'DLT, and 'GOK = no more urban-themed competitors, in any shape or form. And it'll be that way least for a long, long time unless the unthinkable happens with the 'indies' (WABB-FM, WZEW, WNSP, WAVH).
 
What should happen is they should change 98.7's format to Jazz. Simply because this area has enough country stations.

104.1, 102.7, 94.9, 105.5, 92.5, 104.7 and 98.7 (did I miss any?)

If you want jazz, get Sirius. Guess this area won't cut it.

I believe 104.7 and 105.5 are not country. 105.5 is ESPN radio and 104.7 is not country but don't know what it is!
 
The poster just has his geographic area shifted 75 miles to the east. 105.5 is Country WYZB in Fort Walton, Sports WNSP in Mobile. 104.7 is Country WAAZ in Fort Walton / Pensacola. 104.9 is News Talk WBUV is Biloxi / Mobile. 92.5 is the 100kw country powerhouse in Panama City, nowhere near Mobile.
 
And what does all of this have to do with the original post ::)

#1 Country is not going to leave the market
#2 You won't see full time Jazz in Mobile.
#3 Stations are not created on the basis of a "New Slogan"

Sorry, don't mean to sound mean ;D...but sometimes when a subject is posted is seems to go way out in left field.....

All the radical changes would be nice...but it ain't gonna happen...

Will Rick and Bubba save WYOK or will 104.1 flip again in the next year?

The WGOK 900 / WDLT 660 simulcast can't last forever. What format should 660 pick up? Or could it be sold?

Why does everything in Mobile involve Cumulus?

You know, you might be right. Hot 104 was such a forgettable station that I have no idea what they played. I remember Wizard 104, WGCX, the Dawg, K-104, and Star 104. Star 104 carried "Catt's Sunday Brunch" Jazz show for several years. It was quite irritating to turn on the radio on Sunday and hear jazz instead of that way cool 80's music.
 
Seriously, what is the allure of R & B? There is/was this weird AL addiction to them, like they are the poster boys
of progressive radio for the state or what? To me, regardless of their politics, they drag it on and on. The last time I
tried to listen to them was in Birmingham in a five minute span, someone on that show said "you know" between almost
every other word. If that's as good as radio is in 2007, just turn all the transmitters off and save the energy.
I wanted to throw the radio the window out onto I-65. My friend, who was driving, and an admitted redneck
himself, couldn't take it. I love "Freebird" as much as any other Southerner, but WHY, seriously, make that HOW
do people listen to this?
