Two Changes in Redding Radio

Both of these happened in March and were both at results stations
1. 107.1 Jack FM is now 107.1 Bob FM
2. Smooth Jazz 96.1 has become XS Sports 96.1 ESPN Radio w/ Giants Baseball

The Jack FM franchise must cost more than the Bob FM franchise.

What's the differents, and how does one get the rights to Jack or Bob?

Jack is a trademark of CBS radio and probably charges for the right to that name, other that that usally Jack, Bob, Max, and even Steve-FM have the same Adult Hits Format.

Not quite. Jack is a trademark of SparkNet, and CBS has a deal to license that trademark and use SparkNet's services. SparkNet licenses Dial Global to distribute Jack FM via satellite to all stations in markets smaller than #40.

I don't remember who owns Bob, but it, too, must be licensed. I've been told the licensing fees are cheaper and that you're allowed more local autonomy in how you program a station running Bob than you do with Jack, but I don't know the details. I do, however, know that you don't have to take the satellite version of Bob if you're in a smaller market.

I thought the Dial Global version of JACK FM was also available on 100% barter for smaller markets with the music and imaging on hard drive (no satellite requirement). But I could be wrong.

I guess it's smart for Results Radio to have BOB in Chico and Redding, although I hear those two stations sound very sloppy.

Also, I was under the impression that BOB FM is a free-for-all in the U.S. (not licensed by anybody specific), so any station can call itself BOB and play anything it wants.

Bob FM is trademarked in the US by Commonwealth Radio for use in a specific group of cities (Serial #77276229), and by Kroeger Media of Canada without any territorial claims (Serial #77454473), according to a perfunctory search at USPTO.gov conducted by some guy a few minutes ago...
