Two-Fers

One daytime two-fer not far from me, at Pacific Beach, CA, is 1390 XEKT and KLTX.

Here's a recording of them on the barefoot Sony SRF-59 in December 2011, a little before 2 pm

On the PL-606, the signal strength display was fluctuating (that's how it behaves with co-channel interference that isn't exactly on frequency) between about 34 and 42 dBµ.

I'd like to know ...

Does anyone have any daytime two-fers that are strong enough, so that with just a pocket radio's built-in ferrite, it's as strong as that KLTX/XEKT recording would have been if I had used a Superradio or a Select-A-Tenna? Or what's the closest you guys could come to a two-fer like that, without skip conditions?

And what kind of an antenna/radio would it take to be able to get mid-day no-skip reception equivalent to the above recording when you plant yourself halfway between two co-channel class-A 50+kW AM stations, assuming all others on that frequency were off the air? Examples include:
540 XEWA/CBK,
650 WSM/KENI,
690 CINF?CKGM (fcc accuracy in question)/XEWW,
710 KIRO/WOR,
730 CKAC/XEX,
750 WSB/KFQD,
810 KGO/WGY,
850 KOA/KICY;KOA/XETQ;KICY/XETQ,
940 CINW/XEQ,
1000 KOMO/WMVP,
1010 CBR/CFRB,
1060 KYW/XEEP,
1070 KNX/CBA (or is this one off?),
1080 KRLD/WTIC,
1090 KAAY/WBAL;KAAY/XEPRS;WBAL/XEPRS (note XEPRS is directional fulltime using their night pattern),
1110 KFAB/WBT,
1130 WBBR/KWKH;KWKH/CKWX;WBBR/CKWX,
1140 WRVA/XEMR,
1170 WWVA/KFAQ;KFAQ/KJNP;WWVA/KJNP,
1190 KEX/XEWK,
1500 KSTP/WFED,
1520 WWKB/KOKC, and
1530 KFBK/WCKY.

At those distances, the problem is mainly one of eliminating all sources of manmade noise, and hoping that natural noise sources wouldn't obliterate the signals. It would take no compromise longwire antennas and very sensitive receivers with extremely low noise front ends. But for AM, the most important thing of all would be high ground conductivity. That was the key in the incredible daytime reception I had in Lubbock, TX, and on beaches such as Daytona Beach Shores.

Looking at the list you have, I would say the vast majority of the scenarios would be totally impossible, and not just because of the intervening stations. I would say that moving to Lubbock would be a good move for the aspiring AM DX'er who wants to work both coasts because it is one of the few places in the middle of the country with very high ground conductivity.

We get lots of twofers in south Florida, if jammers count.
Actually, most Cuban jamming is done by relaying their national networks on frequencies of stations they want to keep out.

When I was young, I traveled west and could hear a cacophony of CKLW, XELO (now XEROK), and PJB (now defunct).

Here's a two-fer of XEKT and KLTX on 1390 that I recorded this morning just after 10am PST, at Sunset Cliffs area near San Diego.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-At8P3YWv0g

I would like to find another spot to record it again, where the two stations are equal strength. (At that location, I think KLTX was somewhat stronger.)

Does anyone else have any two-fers like that near them, especially ones that are that strong on a small pocket radio like the SRF-59, ICF-S10 MK-II, Sangean SR-35, etc? Or, any three-fers or more? :) (Skywaves, tropo, etc. need not apply.)

Here are a few from where we are this week and next at our annual stay in St. Pete Beach. All our daytime, and I'll list the stronger one first....

570: WTBN local. R. Reloj underneath when nulled.
590: R. Nacional/WDIZ
640: R. Progreso/WVLG
690: Jacksonville/WQNO
710: "Cuban Chorus"/WAQI
740: WGYM/KTRH
790: WLBE/R.Reloj
870: WWL/R. Reloj
950: R. Reloj/WTLN
1620: Cuba/WNTP

Time and circumstances permitting, I'll try to fill in the blanks before I leave here the weekend after next (for California).

In Danville VA

90.1 WNAA/WMVE
92.3 WXLK/WKRR
97.9 WZZU/WCHL FM translator
98.1 WBRF/WQSM
99.9 WCMC/WZBB
880 WSLK/WPIP

Living between 3 radio markets Roanoke Greensboro and Raleigh helps!

Sorry for the topic veer, but you're planning another Cali trip, cyberdad? Where are you planning to be this time? I remember fondly a thread from a few years ago where you said things like "KCBS coming in better here than in Napa!", "XEPN good day & night, wow!", "Tijuana 1030 kicking sand on KTNQ", etc. :) If you come to the San Diego area maybe you would experience the co-channel daytime contest between XEKT and KLTX on 1390? (I posted a video earlier in the thread to show what it's like.) Maybe you'll be making another thread topic soon?

Sorry for the delayed response. Busy with friends and fam here in the Tampa Bay area, and not much time for the board....or DX. But we're having a great time....

Anyway, we'll be in the Los Angeles area. Hisperia with brother-in-law in the desert (which has proven to be a great DX spot), for a couple of days. Then a couple of days in Santa Monica with our daughter, who moved there last summer after living overseas for fifteen years. It's a road trip, and we're also working our way west with stops to visit more friends and family. Starting with a "detour" Saturday on the east coast of Florida (Hutchinson Island), then westward with family visit stops in Texas and Arizona. After So-Cal, we follow the route of U.S. 66 back home. Hopefully I'll find more time to turn the radio on than has been the case during these past two weeks in Florida. As always, I'll report anything noteworthy that I come across. And, also as always, I'm happy to take requests or suggestions from you guys.
