Two FM Conservative Talkers Fail, Flip

In Lexington KY and San Antonio TX.

Apparently there is such a thing as a saturation point.

How long will that pathetic FM Talker in Denver hang on?

There's a new all-over-the-road FM talker in Syracuse. From Levin to Smerconish to Stephanie Miller to freakin' Bob & Tom. I give it five months.

I think a lot of stations that flip to talk on the FM dial do it purely out of economical reasons. Once you flip from music ASCAP fees go away, you don't need local voice talent or even pay to voice track. You don't need someone scheduling in selector etc....

If you are already a second tier talk station you don' have to worry about picking up Rush or Hannity and the fees that go along with them so basically you're entire lineup is on barter which is fine because you have plenty of empty inventory. Basically you are trying to make enough money locally to pay the electric bill and the one or two programming salaries you have to pay.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

It's all about the money. Syndicated talk is one of the least expensive formats to run. Now...we can debate whether it's good radio or not all day long but more stations will be making the switch. I am talking to two in a mid-west state right who are filling out their line up right now. Local mornings and off the bird the rest of the day. If I owned a station I would be tempted to do the exact same thing.

SF, are you a consultant?

<he asks, in a shameless attempt to make himself conspicuous for the lineup-filling-out process>

Hmmm...am I a consultant? Whoa! Did you see that? Over there! Look! (signal_faded exits stage left as the room looks right)

Question:

Did either of those two FM failed talkers have a substantial local news component to their programming or were they just airing mostly "B" level talk shows in the hopes of grabbing a point or two?

It's called "News-talk" for a reason. I've always been told a solid local news presence is a must when doing this format.

Because that station is a Citadel station, perhaps it will last longer than that, because they probably can't afford another format. Same principle though.
