two fringe big signals with no HD, why??

WPST and WJBR, I cannot understand why these fringe powerhouses do not have any HD.....I know not many Jersey signals have HD, but in Delaware most signals have HD's, one of the best is WSTW-HD-2, Graffiti Radio, plus a good signal to boot. A good format would be WPST running Alternative on HD-2, the way they sounded in the 80's and WJBR running Classic Oldies on their HD-2, WOGL always has good numbers down that way, just my thoughts....

Nassau isn't flush with money these days to upgrade WPST to HD. Plus Nassau only operated two HD stations - 107.5 in Reading and WCRB in Boston - and they just sold WCRB to WGBH in Boston for $14 mill to raise some capital.

Nassua also lost 107.5 in BOYERTOWN. Their Allentown area stations; 99.9 The Hawk, and 107.1 the Bone are not in HD either. Radio One does not have their stations in HD; 100.3, 103.9...not sure about 107.9 since it does not come in good in my area to begin with. (I actually had WEBE 108 full HD coming in on 107.9 the other night) WRFY 102.5 Reading is not in HD either......does CC still own them?

WRNB is in HD with no side channels just the main signal...the two other R1 properties 100.3 and 103.9 are not in HD. Don't know how HD can get off the ground with nobody really taking it serious....the only stations willing to commit to it are the large market signals that unloaded their Rock formats and stuck them on HD-2-3, ala NYC. WSTW is a different example of a smaller market signal that put a good Alternative format on the HD-2, while keepint hit music on their main channel, but from what I heard their Alternative is pulling in fantastic numbers on HD-2, maybe they will flip flop the formats.

fantastic numbers? what, they have 2 listeners compared to the average 1 listener on an HD2? you've got to be kidding. the reason why PST and JBR don't have HD is because they don't want to waste money on a technology nobody is using.

Graffiti Radio - WSTW's HD2 - draws disproportionately more listeners via Internet streaming than on HD2. Graffiti Radio shows what you can do with an alternative station. However, by definition, a cult following does not necessarily translate into mass ratings. Don't hold your breath waiting for a flip-flop of Graffiti with the current WSTW. And yes, the future of HD is very much a question mark. Try asking for it as the car salesman on the showroom floor is telling you about the incredible sound system and satellite receiver available in that shiny new vehicle. A few more car lines are offering HD, but I detect no great clamor from the public. I did see an HD receiver at Radio Shack (Or more accurately, "The Shack"!) just before Christmas. HD STILL may have a little more life in it than quadrophonic FM or stereo AM did, but most people (including clerks at Radio Shack) don't have a clue.

The funny thing is I just bought a new 2010 Ford at Pacifico and I wanted an HD radio and the salesman did everything but blow my head off talking me out of it. In fact, he installed a new Sirius system with free subscription indefinitely. Same thing with my 2008 Ford, they will not deal with HD. But, my problem or question, Satellite is Ok and the Internet is fine also, but what about portability, do they make Satellite receivers that you can carry around and listen or can the internet be made portable outside of going on line with some Blackberry phone to listen. At least you can receive HD on the go, today I was in Concord Mall and had WSTW-2 on, same with other areas, the main signals are all loaded with urban and hispanic formats all over the country, you have to tune into HD-2's for the rock formats, so what can one do....

One question: Did the salesman try to talk you out of an HD radio in that car because he couldn't offer it, or because that sales rep simply didn't understand it or had some other objection?

I might be misreading you, but satellite radio has had portable receivers for over 6 years. HD has, what, the Best Buy unit, for the past 6 months? Portable internet is still cell or satellite based, and rather expensive, but that will likely change in the coming years (look at broadband internet's advance - it's now ubiquitous). Why? Because people want it. HD radio? Nah.

HD radio isn't a question mark at this point. It's a footnote in history.

My guess is he's tired of complaints from constantly switching between analog and digital to FM sounding good until the digital kicks in then it sounds like a bad mp3 (on stations running two or three HD streams, especially if they're running three).

Salesmen are probably tired of the high expectation of HD turning into the streaming complaints from IBOC. And it doesn't help being on the east coast where first-adjacent channels are quite common. :)

I checked out the HD lists for the country, it states WJBR will be in HD very soon and have an HD-2 and 3 before the holidays. It had to happen, Beasley owns them and all their signals are HD. What I meant was I know Satellite had portables for years but they are very expensive and the ones I witnessed did not receive well indoors and in buildings with heavy structure. I just heard my buddies blackberry storm we were in the mall and the internet is 30.00 per month extra but worth it, I went to radio locator and streamed stations on the net.....also had music channels etc., so I guess for 30.00 per month its the way to go....and static free in HD stereo...

Another reason some stations might decide against adding HD is that it reduces the power of their analog signals, if I understand it correctly.

That is what I heard, but in the case of WSTW and WRFF their main signal seems stronger, who knows...on the other note, how does 104.3 compare to 104.5, is the playlist similar, 104.5 has much better ratings than 104.3 with more competition in the market. I also heard 97.9 has HD-2 and 3 which are Rock oriented, how is their side bands for rock. Never seen a rocker with 3 HD's all rock...Is DSD's HD-2 Classic Country is it a good mix, sorry for all the questions but don't get down that way too much anymore...
