Whoa...on a few occasions when I've monitored WAZN's signal while on Route 128, I've been able to hold Brockton's WBET-AM 1460 except for a small arc before and after Route 2. That doesn't seem like a 10KW-equivalent signal to me. In comparison, I have to drive several miles past the WNNW-AM 800 tower in Andover before I can pick up Providence's WSKO-AM 790...and WNNW is only 3K.

There have been many, many times in the past 18 months when WAZN has operated at reduced power and possibly nondirectionally. There were many problems in getting the array to perform correctly and to suppress reradiation of the very strong signal from 50-kW WWZN. which is only a couple of miles to the east. Consult the FCC's CDBS system for the patterns. WTTT's towers are 143 degrees at 1470 and the ground system was sized for 1150, which makes it oversized at 1470. The result is very respectable efficiency. At an azimuth of 323 degrees, the licensed day pattern has a radiation maximum of 941.55 mV/m @ 1 km. If you divide 941.55 by sqrt(10), you get almost 298 mV/m. In other words, the signal to the northwest is the equivalent of 10 kW ND into a single tower nearly 1/4 wavelength high. And the main lobe is not super narrow either.
At night, the main lobe is to the southeast and radiation to the northwest is sharply reduced. So despite using almost 2.5 times the power at night, WAZN sends only the equivalent of about 2 kW to the northwest after sunset. The signal to the southeast--at 143 degrees--is equivalant to almost 25 kW, however.

WLYN is currently operating on a new, backup transmitter, and the stereo signal is switched off. Work at that site is ongoing, as well.

If that's permanently, that makes WJIB 740 the very last holdout for analog AM Stereo in the Boston market.

WLYN in Stereo
No, it is not permanent. The backup transmitter does not have a stereo generator. Additional AC power needs to be brought in to the shack, and then the remote control wired to change back and forth between transmitters. Keep in mind that the only time the program content is in true Stereo, is when the program originates from the WLYN studio in Woburn. Any program that comes to us from a remote studio (by whatever means) is a Mono source.

We have a pretty good idea who started the initial rumor - and the reasons why. A rumor is only as good as its source - the source here was unsubstantiated and highly suspect...
