Two more new ones to add to KCKM, including some UNIDs/#600 overall! 3/22/14 early

Very late last night after midnight I DXed again. It's fun DXing late at night now because I am always getting something really good. And it worked out again! First, the really nice new ones, after the KCKM DX Test.

1250 - KBRF Fergus Falls, MN; very weak WX forecast nulling out KNEU and their pesty 129 watt night signal here (heard w/ ID at 0053); ID at 0100 PT "This is AM 1250, KBRF Fergus Falls" fading up; right place at the right time. NEW #599, 2.2KW, 1163 miles! I never expected this ID to pop up at the right time. Only MN #3 from here.

600 - KSJB Jamestown, ND; poor in CJWW/KGEZ/KCOL jumble with weather forecast, "from the KSJB weather center" at 0132 PT. NEW #600! 5000 watts at 1033 miles. CJWW has always killed this station for me because they are so pesty. ND #7. And ironically, new #600 *was* on 600 khz!

UNIDs heard
540 UNID Coast to Coast AM under CBK, in fade. I wonder if it was 12W KYAH Delta, UT (probably not Florida even though it's 50000 watts)
1250 UNID SSer, heard a weak ID but nothing close to "Super X" (KYYS). I wonder if this was actually Kansas City, or it was KLLK Willits CA off the back. I've heard KLLK on "southern nights" before.
1250 Old Time Radio, doesn't match KBRF's schedule, I wonder if I had CHSM. Strong for a short period before 1:00.
1250 Brief fadeup of sports, KZDC San Antonio TX?
1330 UNID with "Let's Get It On" Marvin Gaye at 0106, then "Rock On" David Essex closer to 1:30. Not CJYM, I was in the null. Maybe KXXJ Juneau, AK? Needed here.
630 UNID Country station, heard Jerrod Niemann and Brooks and Dunn. Could have been CFCO (and it did actually match the playlist at 4:25AM ET) but "NO ID, NEW LOG".
1220 UNID Classical likely CJRB way under KPJC Salem, OR.

Relogs
700 WLW Cincinnati, OH good at 0025 with trucking program well over KXLX.
600 KGEZ Kalispell, MT; fair with 50s oldies and "right here on 600, KGEZ" at 0017 PT 3/22.
740 KVOX Fargo, ND; VERY strong (really 940W?) killing everything else at 0020 with ESPN biography program. Matches KUTI and KIRO.
870 KJMP Pierce, CO; WX forecast mentioning snow in Northern CO; ID "The Big 87 KJMP" at 0033 PT 3/22.
750 KOAL Price, UT; huge with "Price Auto Group" ad at 0031 PT 3/22.
1250 KNEU Roosevelt, UT; ID at 0056 "Real Country AM 1250, KNEU". Listed at 129W at night.
1700 KKLF Richardson, TX; Tejano under XEPE. A sports station under XEPE was likely KVNS, both at 0107 PT.
1660 KQWB West Fargo, ND True Oldies at 0111 PT.
1330 KWKW Los Angeles, CA fading up with ESPN Deportes at 0134 PT.
1290 KOWB Laramie, WY ID in C2C; "KOWB, News and Sports Talk for Southeast Wyoming" at 0139. Last log before shutting off and going to bed.

Thanks to EN71 (aka Lawppy on this board), I confirmed a shocking 4th new one!

630 - CFCO Chatham, ON; EN71 kept telling me to "log it, log it!" and I did. Jerrod Niemann at 0124 PT matches playlist, ditto Brooks and Dunn "Ain't Nothin' Bout You" at 0127-30 PT. Way under KCIS, KFXD and maybe KHOW but even if KVMA-AR was on 1KW, it would never make it on this crowded channel, ditto KLEA in Lovington NM, also country, even if that was 500W day power. NEW #601, 6KW, 1,891 miles!! ON #4 and the 2nd new one this year (CKDO was the first). This has been an incredible year thanks to that 3 foot loop. Without it, 1/2 of these logs could NOT be heard.

There's been a lot of talk around here that Canadian stations may be staying on day power and pattern as a protest against IBOC interference. Not saying you couldn't hear CFCO on night pattern occasionally, and it's actually stronger at night with 6 kW to the NW than with 10 kW to the NW in the daytime. But WA is more straight West than NW. The day pattern secondary main lobe maximum, just slightly lower in inverse field than the primary main lobe maximum, goes straight west.

Interesting observation. I have not heard CFCO since even when WBBM comes in good on 780 from Chicago. 630 here is really crowded, mainly it's KFXD but combined with KCIS, CHED and sometimes KHOW it makes for some tough listening on 630. And I still need KPLY Reno! My next really wanted Ontario is CFTR 680 in Toronto. I get a good null on KNBR E-W but if I hear anything at all it's CJOB Winnipeg.

I think CFTR would be pretty tough duty in Washington State. Which isn't to say it couldn't be done. Obviously they're protecting CJOB (and I'd guess "officially" KNBR as well). But the radio-locator map does show a tiny little spike in your direction. Of course you could always catch them on day pattern....still with a null toward CJOB, but nowhere near as severe.

CFCO, on the other hand, has a night pattern that probably would work better for you than the day pattern....assuming you can somehow neutralize the more nearby pests. I never used to hear them at night when they were 1kw, but now at 6kw I hear them all the time. I think Radioman has also heard them during the day....30 or so miles east of me.

Sidebar point FWIW..... I've driven by both CFTR and CFCO "antenna farms"dozens of times. And I'm scheduled to do so again at the end of this month. CFTR is right on the shore of Lake Ontario....just outside of Hamilton and about 40 miles from downtown Toronto via an all-water path. CFCO is in a very flat farm country, which I would guess has fabulous ground conductivity.

Any luck yet? I was in Ontario earlier this week, and had lunch yesterday at a Harvey's restaurant in a little strip mall area adjoining CFTR's 8-tower plant. My guess is that there's probably enough RF in the place to grill the (very tasty) burgers without needing to turn on the cooking equipment! :)

Regarding CFCO I have heard it during the day in the near north Chicago burbs, one of my better daytime ground wave catches. That was before WTMJ's ISLOP.

I've reached the end of the 13-14 MW season, so no. From now until early September DX will be pretty crappy. I'm going FM and trying and trying to get a voice recorder this year. Connecting one to my G5 is a challenge because the line out plug is in a circle and most recorders are "wide open" (no inputs) or have a USB cable. I'll need THAT for the computer however to post E-skip files online. Enough waiting for some IDs! It would also prove useful in unattended Es recordings - there have been some good skip openings I've missed due to work.

I thought you had said that you'd snagged CFCO during the day here. Was that before or after their current pattern? Where I am....west of you...I've never caught them any later than a half hour or so after sunrise. I did, however, catch (then) KXOK a few times....long before WTMJ turned their noisemaker on.

On my drive back from the Toronto area yesterday, CFCO was still tripping the scan button in the rental car at least 120 miles west of Detroit on I-94. More than halfway across Michigan. They finally got smothered by WTMJ's hiss and splatter just before the lake at Benton Harbor. On the other end of my journey, CFCO is very listenable around Niagara Falls, with 50kw CFMJ (640) being pretty much a non-issue.

CFCO has quite a signal. I don't know when they changed their pattern, but it's been at least 5 years since I've heard them during the day. I too heard KXOK many years ago during the day depending on which way I turned my radio.
Thanks for the report on your drive. CFCO really gets a good east west daytime signal.

Off the top of my head, CFCO and WJR are the only daytime AM signals I can think of that reach four Great Lakes. WJR may actually be also audible daytime at the southeastern tip of Lake Superior, thus touching all five.

That is quite impressive. I used to get WJR during the day fairly well until the 750 in Portage, Indiana combined with WBBM's IBLOCK ruined that. Also back in the day, WHO used to be easily catchable for me daytime until WNVR moved in. Same thing with two other Iowa stations, KWMT & WOI both got crowded out.
