Two more stations tweak music

A couple of months ago KQOL (KOOL 93.1) updated it's sound and dropped most of their early 60s music in favor of 1970s/late 60s based gold. Now I have noticed two more stations have tweaked their music.

SUNNY has gotten slightly younger and harder. I have noticed they started playing such songs as Bon Jovi's "Living On A Prayer" and "Wanted Dead Or Alive".

KKLZ has started playing some 1990s rock from artists such as Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots.

The only disadvantage I see when stations update their music is that they lose some of their exclusivity, as stations move towards the middle they start playing songs that can be heard on multiple stations. But overall I can understand these moves as stations keep their audiences from aging out of 25-54. As everyone knows, there is very little advertising dollars for 55+.

Most oldies stations, at least in medium to major markets, have tweaked their playlists within the past couple of years.

A lot of AC stations have gotten younger, harder, and have even added some good variety. Although I don't know of any AC's playing Bob Jovi!

Is KKLZ a classic rock station?

You hit the nail on the head with that one.

KKLZ

Yes, KKLZ has been a classic rock station for 20 years. Even if songs like "Come As You Are" are now 15 years old, it's still unusual for classic rockers to play them. One exception is KSAN/San Francisco which about a year ago updated it's playlist to include 90s rock. It seems like KKLZ is moving in that direction.

There is certainly a "youth movement" at KKLZ, first they fire their oldest air personality and now they add some 90s grunge to their playlist. It seems like KKLZ is moving more towards KOMP and further from KXPT. KOMP had a great February extrap and appears to be the station many ex-Howard Stern listeners migrated to. We'll see if the changes KKLZ made help them grab some of KOMPs large male audience or not.

Re: KKLZ

When I am in LV, which is 2-3 times a year..I like to listen to KKLZ at night as they seem to play lots of hairbands and 90's stuff whereas in the daytime, it is traditional classic rock....if I were programming KKLZ, I would dedicate one evening to strickly hairbands like some stations are doing....add in some other specialty programming...i find KKLZ does not have much programming compared to many other classic rock stations I have heard....a good example is 97 rock from Buffalo and KLOS in L.A
