Two My9's on Cablevision

Was doing some channel surfing on Cablevision when I stopped on Channel 24--I find out that MyTV9--aka WCTX Channel 59 New Haven has been added to the broadcast basic line-up. Watching a UCONN/Temple football game and sure enough, the MyTV9 bug came up along with the Yankees logo--they air whatever games the other My9 WWOR-TV airs. For the record, 24 was the on-screen guide, which has gone all the way up or down to channel 1. Want proof?

This brings to 8 the number of CT OTA signals on Cablevision for Bridgeport and Norwalk customers. New Haven and Litchfield customers still get WCTX on 17.

I has to be the most stupid marketing I've even seen by a network. It seems that there are many stations that can't even call themselves by their proper channel number. I had written to Channel 8 about this as a group of students and I were studying TV news and marketing. I don't recall the answer to my query but it went along the lines that it didn't matter and people aren't that stupid.

I bet they never thought about the fact there could me more than one MyTV9's (or any channel number for that matter) that could be received in a given market.

I know I can't get NYC's MyTV 9 on DirecTV in the New Haven market, but I wonder if both are available to those in Fairfield County.

Bill, if you mean for DirecTV customers in Fairfield County--nope. You get the NYC stations only. But in terms of the cable systems in New Haven, both Comcast and Cablevision carry both My9's. And I also think some parts of Fairfield are served by Charter which depending on where you live you can get both 9 and 59.

Now in terms of the station branding--you are RIGHT ON in calling MyTV 9 VERY WEAK! If anything, it should be MyCTX or My59CT. But MyTV9 is because on most cable systems, WCTX is carried on channel 9. Which leads one to wonder why WVIT isn't called NBC 4, though on-air it's NBC 30. Cablevision carries 30 on cable 6.

Bottom line...My9 is a lie. WCTX is channel 59. And not ALL people get My9 on Cable Channel 9.

Why on that channel line-up for stations like CW 11, CW 20, My 9, WCTX they don't put the City name and then the network. Such as how it says WCBS New York (CBS).

On the topic of WCTX. I also agree that they shouldn't call it My 9. As NYC has My 9 and its only a few miles down I-95. Would it of been that bad to call it My CT 59 or something. They started with the 9 when they called it UPN 9 I believe.

It was WTVU from signon until 1996, then WBNE from 1996-2001, and WCTX since.

Does WCTX get higher ratings because some people write "MyTV 9" in their diaries when they're really watching WWOR?

I agree. Calling WCTX "MyTV 9" is stupid. Sometimes identifying yourself by the cable channel many systems carry you in makes sense, like if you're a low-power station that not many people get over-the-air (CBS 3 Springfield, anyone?). But having two stations in adjacent markets, that can both be received by many people, just causes confusion. Why couldn't they have used "My TV Connecticut" or something?

And if you really want to go further back like to the 1980's, 59 was W59AA, a translator for WVIT. Also in the early 50's it was going to be called WELI-TV, named for the radio station. There was a CP granted according to the Wikipedia site for CTX. The license was there, but just never really took off.

AND I QUOTE:

"The CP was originally owned by the Connecticut Radio Foundation. This organization was never able to get the station on the air so it sold the CP to Impart Systems in 1967."

I believe the signed on in 1995, right before the launch of the WB Network.

Throughout the course of the year, they'd carry coverage of the O.J. Trial via KTLA.
