Two Neglected AM Stations, WCKL &WKZE

Back in 2003 BLACK UNITED FUND OF NEW YORK, INC. bought WCKL from Clear Channel and immediately took the station silent for what is listed as financial reasons. Since a station can loose their license if they are silent for more than a year in May 2004 they signed an agreement with clear channel to simulcast 92.9 WBPM ,then cruisin 93.5 WCZR for one year .They then went silent for another year, just recently signing back on simulating WCZR . Furthermore, their license was about to expire anyway but they applied for and were granted a renewal by the FCC. My question is why does the FCC allow this when BLACK UNITED FUND OF NEW YORK, INC. have shown no ability to program and keep the facility on the air themselves since acquiring it 3 years ago. I assume that given their title they hoped to create programming aimed at Blacks ,which if great, but if they can’t financially do it why not sell out to somebody who can rather than renew the license and then agree to a simulcast for a year just to be on the legally on the air? Then again I wonder how anybody could effectively reach many Black listeners on a tiny rural radio station.
Another peeve is since WKZE AM /FM was taken over by WILLPOWER RADIO, LLC they began using the Air America service, on the AM station without any apparent clue as to what is going on. The few times I have listened I don’t recall any local commercials .When the change was announced I wondered how an all talk format would work on a daytime only station. How can you maintain listener interest when you must sign off mid topic? The answer is very badly .When the sunsets (actually about 5 minutes before) they simply shut down, abruptly cutting a speaker off mid sentence. If a listener is interested in what the person is saying this must be very frustrating since the signal simply disappears without explanation or legal sign off .There isn’t even a station ID which is a violation of FCC regulations. Since nobody has complained I guess not many people are listening.

I listened to WCKL simulcasting "Cruisin' 93.5" now, because oldies is appealing to older demographics who listens to oldies on AM. AM is a dominant band for people ages 55-75. WBPM's "Cool-92.9" is still paying oldies on FM appeals to younger demographics ages 25-54 according to the Arbitrons as we mentioned many times. I remember when Clear Channel (before Pamal) simulcasting WBPM's "Cool 92.9" on WCKL under the name "560 Rock" rather than the simulcast of "92.9 Rock" which was formerly WRKW. The station went dark after sunset was bogus. I remember when WCKL was a station that carried adult standards like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, the Letterman and others. It was a great station on AM where it used to carry WW1 standards with the likes of Chick Watkins, Jim Baine and the rest. The same WW1 people who usually syndicated on WMTR at 1250 used to be a standards station in Morristown, NJ with just a half a listeners in some parts of New York City. That's what the station was all about.

That's because they have no choice. Standards have been relegated to AM. No FM stations will pick that up since Sinatra fans are dwindling every day. I will not suddenly rediscover static and interference filled low powered AM when I turn 55 .AM is no place for music. That's my point. Besides the current owners are only using crusin 93.5 simulcast to keep their license alive.

Tri-State offered to buy WKZE AM, owner wanted 300,000!!!! Then we offered to run it from our cable television studios, do a live morning show, keep it local, at no cost (we are a non-profit)...we were turned down. Now its just a signal that rebroadcasts an internet feed of Air America...it really is a waste of a radio signal...

They dont give a rats tail as long as they get $$,thats what the FCC has evolved into unfortunetly..........

A group I'm somewhat involved with inquired about buying WCKL 560 (a LONG time before I came to KYYZ) and we were told that it wasn't available but the attorney was duty bound by contract to pass on the offer to their client.
