Two new logs heard at midnight 2/22 (early 2/23/14)

In bed, I logged two new stations before I shut it off. Both were highly-needed!
1580 – KBLA Santa Monica, CA; IDed with KBLA call sign mention and mention of “Santa Monica-Los Angeles” at 0000 PT 2/22 (2/23). NEW #583, 50KW directional toward Hawaii; 871 miles. No sign of KGAL.

950 – XEKAM Rosarito, BCN; Mexican NA at 0001 PT; ID “Radio Formula, equis-eh-KAM” (XEKAM) shortly after, over KJR. NEW #584, 5KW, 992 miles. Good signal at this point for distance!

Also heard Coast to Coast AM on 1330 khz under KWKW (after KKPZ signed off), could it be KNSS? If only I had an ID, KNSS would be new and Kansas would be a new AM state.

Hearing KBLA in Wa is quite a catch. I know from experience they put a big signal into Hawaii.

Helped that conditions were slightly auroral. No sign of KGAL on 1580, just KBLA and maybe a weak KMIK in AZ.

Last night on 540 was really interesting. I had XESURF, plus ranchera music from XEWA San Luis Potosi, Mexico (a very rare log at 2000+ miles), a very weak CBK Watrous, SK and a weak station with the start of Coast to Coast AM with George Noory around 2210 PT. I wonder if this was 12W KYAH Delta, UT at 643 miles? It faded in weakly for a couple minutes and was never heard again. And I am certain this was not WFLF Tampa, FL.

I used to hear XEWA in northern Illinois more often, but now I rarely hear it.

As a high school student in the 1970s, I remember when KBLA was KDAY and it was a soul station (as the format was called) that broadcast the R&B and disco hits of the day. The African-American bus driver that took us to and from school always had KDAY on the bus radio. In 1978, Michael Zager's "Let's All Chant" was a huge soul hit, if not a big pop hit, and I still remember to this day that song on the bus radio getting heavy airplay--"OOO-uh! OOO-uh!" (clap-clap-clap) "Let's all chant!" (clap-clap-clap) "OOO-uh! OOO-uh!" (clap-clap-clap) "Let's all chant!" over and over and over and over and...
