Two new stations on air!

While making the journey from Auburn to the Free State of Winston last night I discovered two new stations on air... two in the same night is something rare for me.

1. WBNB 91.3 licensed to Equality is on the air playing Southern Gospel as "The Life FM". I heard their ID (Equality/Alexander City) on 280 near Goodwater.

2. This isn't really new but it's new in AL and is the only station in the state which starts with a "K". KRLE, formerly licensed to Oberlin, KS, is now on the air. Heard them on 278 west of Cullman with a solid signal and heard their ID as KRLE Carbon Hill/Jasper. Format is K-Love's CCM format

Travis, that's awesome. Thanks for the updates on these stations. I'm kinda blown away that KRLE actually did move to Carbon Hill. 70 kW vertical should give them quite a good coverage area.

I too did not think KRLE would actually move to AL... yes, they have a solid coverage area, by far the best non comm around here (Addison/Arley area) followed by WFIX 91.3 in the Shoals and 88.5 The planet in Jasper.

On another note, has Alabama ever had a move-in station from across the Mississippi River with the "K" callsign before?

I guess there's no point in spending the money or the lawyer's time if they only say it once an hour. They have KYAI in McKee, KY (between Lexington and Knoxville) that "moved" from Texas. There's a few others out there.

This is Alabama's first K-call, but there are a few scattered around elsewhere as Neil noted. I think there's a few in Michigan and there's a bunch in Mississippi: KJMS in Olive Branch, KBUD in Sardis, KRIQ-FM in Richton, KQMP in Hollywood and KOUI in Louisville.

My belief is the FCC has someone who doesn't know where exactly the Mississippi River runs. In the case of KBUD, KOUI and KRIQ, those are all brand new stations built from the start east of the Mississippi so there's no reason they should have K-calls at all!

That's the same story I heard about the one in Michigan (KTGG). That one has been around 20 years. You can almost forgive Mississippi since it does border the river.

There is an unbuilt CP for KYTA-FM in Medart, FL. This is a tiny community in Wakulla County.

Maybe the licensee realized there is not really even a town or business district at that location and that's the reason it is not being built.

I did contact them last April, since I have a nonprofit. KYTA is licensed as a class A noncomm CP.
Never heard a word back from them.

I wouldn't mind having a K-Love here in Huntsville. Not that I don't like Way-FM, I think they are great. I just like having choices and K-Love is a bit different than Way-FM so it would be nice. Not too many formats work well on the non-com band but CCM is usually successful so why not?

Why doesn't the FCC make stations change their calls to start with "W" if they move east of the Mississippi. I would think that would be one of the rules if you want to move east, is find appropriate calls. And why wouldn't they want to correct their mistake with the Mississippi stations? Seems silly to me. Also, why would a station move from KS to AL? If there was room for a new signal in Alabama, why not just start a new station in Alabama? I know it's easier to move a station than to station one from scratch, but still... from KS to AL? I would undestand if it were a neighboring state, but that sure is a long move. Were they trying to open up room for another station in KS to move or upgrade, but didn't want to lose the station entirely so they found a place they could move it in the middle of nowhere in Alabama ??? LOL. Just seems odd to me.

This is the first I've heard of the Wakulla CP. I can see some use for this allocation. Coverage of only Sopchoppy and Alligator Point ain't too shabby. Is there a hole in coverage for one of FSU's stations down there? I would think that a strong signal from FSU's classical station would draw listeners on Alligator Point.

I've been waiting since 2003, for a translator for my daytime only AM... only to have my application logjammed by these CCM drone stations. So, forgive me if I'm not dancing on tables each time there's another new one constructed... I've also leased tower space to these same folks, with sometimes aggrivating results.
