Two NYC HD3 stations (airchecks)

Since another poster raised a question re: HD3's and the doubters are already getting busy, I figured a practical demonstration via recordings would be worth more than pointless debate.

First WPLJ: http://www.sendspace.com/file/0ydovk 9mb @320mp3

Starts out with analog 'till the 5sec mark when it switches to HD1, AT :59 into HD-2 then finally at 2:32 into HD-3. Here the sound seems rather thin and obviously lower in level then the previous two. I don't know what the bitrate distribution is among the three streams, stations decide this, but all seem acceptable w/minimal artifacts and NO multipath!

Next; WNYC-FM

http://www.sendspace.com/file/tbacb4

This one highlights the advantages of digital transmission for Classical music where you can't use heavy compression to mask multipath and a low noise floor is essential.

The recording starts with a fundraiser "cart" with live tag then onto HD-2 and finally HD-3 which is a replay of KCRW's To The Point. Eventhough there seems to be slight overload somewhere in the chain and the pgm is network, it sounds very good, they just need to watch levels.

I tried each of the links. They downloaded, but when realplayer opened, it showed a file length of 0 sec, and then
indicated that the link might be old or outdated.. Your other files all opened correctly.
Anyone else have trouble?

Tom, I just dl'd them via Netscape all went normally. Have you actually checked the properties of the files (11.5 and 9.15 mb), tried playing them in Windows Media Player?

Otherwise, Sendspace may just have had some prob.

The links worked fine for me, I did play these files using winamp.

It sounds to me WPLJ is in Extended Hybrid mode (normal FM-HD is 96kbps divide it up any way you wish, In extented hybrid mode you have 122kpbs of bandwidth) . which means the HD3 channel can use up to 24kbps and since iBiquity uses acc+PRO as its encoder you can have a decent music channel at that bitrate. I do on my stations here in Pittsburgh my stations are HD1 is 48kbps HD2 is also 48kbps and my HD3 is 24kbps all music. and I know someone will wave a flag on this comment but HD can work, the engineer just has to spend many hours tweaking the processing. we been HD since 2004 in extended hybrid mode
