lets talk about "Real Innovation", for the most part, there are at least two stations for every format in Lubbock(and Lord knows Lubbock NEEDS 4 Country stations),XM has dozens of formats and we have lots of stations around here, maybe too many, but what format niche is missing?(and, remember it has to be commercially viable).
and who could benefit from it. (i will withold my answer- or i would have to charge you, ::) i want to hear what you think). and ya' all be nice now!

The knee-jerk format reaction is "alternative", but with younger demos turning inward to their I-pods it just wouldn't be profitable. You kind of hamstring the topic by saying "profitable". Maybe a GOOD classic rock station could do something.

i wasn't talking about "College Radio" where they do not need to be profitable. although they have a unique opportunity do do something innovative, they generally tend to play what the students like and its always some kind of 18-24 metal or T-40 format. with that kind of freedom they could offer something different but choose to do what they like.

you are correct Alternative is frequently mentioned, but it is somewhat narrow and wouldn't grab alot of listeners, but i know a few stations that would be hurt by it. what i'm aiming at, is a "Formatic Hole"- that is NOT being tapped, here and never has to my knowledge. and "Innovation" could also mean Presentation. the "Jack" format was the last format Innovation, and it has come and gone.

not alot of Guts around today to try something different, in Lubbock or anywhere for that matter.

I think it would be interesting to hear someone other than 102.5 play Mainstream CHR for a change.
As for Alternative, Channel 877 and KFMX seem to have that format covered for now.

I would say a more focused Classic Rock station. Something along the lines of KZPS back in the late 80's and 90's. That was the best Classic Rock station I have ever heard. They didn't, or at least they didn't make it seem as if, they were trying to steal you away from the EAGLE etc... It was just a really damn good station. So when I got tired of hearing crap bands like BUSH etc... being played all the time on the EAGLE... I was over on KZPS. Actually, it was more of a 50/50 thing with those stations at the time, because they were both good.

Which brings me back to my comment before about 101... how do you decide to carry BOB&WEAVE at night? That CAN'T be a long term thing? You dump music for talk? That was something I never understood regarding ROCKLINE on Saturday nights. Here you have Saturday night... people are out and about... they wanna have a good time... you should be the soundtrack to their weekend party... and your running a damn talk show on Saturday night? Run that crap on Sunday morning or Sunday night. I just don't get the decisions that occur over there. However, I guess they are making Corporate happy... so that's all that matters.

Man you got me....maybe a lite A/C. We used to have one here that did really well (all the offices played it).

maybe "Stars" is a Lite A/C, just when i think they're an A/C, they play something that makes me think they are after Mix & Kool...
so, maybe that's their idea of A/C, i'm not sure people are "Getting It".

about a Lite A/C station here, the question is..... is Lubbock a Lite A/C kind of market? we haven't had one for quite a while, or had one done correctly to know. to ME this market is all about Joe 6-pack Cowboys & bad ass Rock & Roll, i don't see alot of "High Society" & "Yuppies" that would go for a "Lite" anything.

if you're looking for a "Focused" Classic Rock station rock 101 isn't it, WHY they wake up in the morning & go to work over there i don't know. and throwing B&T on at night proves they have "Given Up"... they NEED a Format Change or at the very least a drastic "Make-Over"... GIVE UP! YOU CAN'T WIN!

I think 101 dragged the term "Classic Rock" so far through the mud that the format is probably dead in Lubbock for many years. 98 KOOL (or is it KOOL 98?) is far more listenable even though it's "Classic Hits". I actually think even though they do well they are the "sleeping giant" of the market and with some promotion could rule the market for many years to come.

Just out of curiosity, which station was KZPS and which one was "The Eagle?" What year was that?

92.5 KZPS.... They had John Dillon, Red Beard (Wait... Red Beard might have been on Q102) etc... We're talking late 80's till early 00's, I believe. It was flipped to some crap format that didn't last and I believe it is coming back or has come back to Classic Rock. I could be wrong on that simply becuz I am not keeping up to date on DFW stations.

The other was of course... 97.1 The Eagle. Chris Ryan, Howard Stern (twice) Russ Martin, Cindy Skull, Robert Miguel etc.... Before becoming ROCK they were a pop station where Kid Kraddick was. Then towards the end of the 80's it flipped to ROCK and stayed that way till early 00's when it was flipped to a Mexican format that didn't last very long. I think, but could be thinking of another station, that the EAGLE then flipped again to maybe a LITE FM format... but then came back to ROCK a couple years ago.

After Z ROCK dropped and The ZOO dropped... The EAGLE was the only ACTIVE ROCK station until the BONE showed up kind of.

I’m not sure if this format would be classified as innovative, but merely a tweak of the existing Jack/Bob FM format. I think it would be neat to see a Lubbock radio station go with more of a Hot AC/recurrent/gold format. Most of the Jack and Bob formats seem to play a little too much classic rock IMO. I think the best station to go with this format would be 99.5. 99 has always had one of the best signals in terms of coverage and processing. I think that still holds true today.

I think you could also get a little creative with your name and slogan. 99.5 The Juke Box “If It’s Music We Play It” I think a format like this truly deserves to be tight in programming with a good jingles/liner package. I’d even like to se a good eighties or early nineties style package return. I also think that you could get away with a few novelty shows like a daily count down or Disco on Saturday nights. I’m thinking Olivers…LOL . At a minimum you’d need a local morning show and afternoon drive. Here’s a music sample that I came up with.

Earth, Wind and Fire “September”
Roxette “The Look”
All American Rejects “Gives You Hell”
Mister Mister “Broken Wings”
Cranberries “Dreams”
Thirty Eight Special “Somebody Like You”
Sister Sledge “We are Family”
Simple Minds “Alive and Kicking”
Anne Lennox “Why”
Billy Joel “Piano Man”
Madonna “Ray of Light”
Matchbox 20 “Unwell”
Bon Jovi “Bed of Roses”

Oh, I presumed you were talking about Lubbock stations.

Sorry about that... I didn't clarify.
