Two questions for the experts

Question #1. I know that things are done for a reason in radio, and I know what the function of "bumper" music is, but lately I've noticed that the music continues to play for sometimes up to 30 seconds after the break and while the host is talking. What is the reason for this? I find it very annoying.

Question #2. I read criticisms of talk show hosts that constantly mention their degree of respect for their callers. I read somewhere that a tiny percentage of listeners actually ever call radio shows. It is my considered opinion that while some of these callers are normal people, the vast majority are either, nut-cases or jerks. Why should the host be polite to people like this? Another question might be, why are they allowed on the air in the first place? Should you be nice to Steve from Fall River or Frank from Gloucester, or Danny from Quincy? These people will never stop calling no matter how rude anyone is to them. When some moron calls up and says "fire Terry FranCOMA" he should be treated with respect? When the host craps all over one of these jerks, I find that entertaining. When someone like Muttnansky lets some jerk crap all over him, I don't find that entertaining.

Sometimes bumper music is used to cue a host into going to break. Other times it is used to pad going into news. Most people would rather hear bumper music than dead air waiting for the news. For national/syndicated shows sometimes the extra music is there to give local stations time for station IDs and promos.

That's true. Usually anywhere from 1-10% of listeners actually interact with radio. Same goes for contests on music stations. Not everyone wants to win a free cd or concert tickets. Just like prizes though, the better the prize (or talk topic) the more people will call in. That's why even Howie has his "first time/long time" people in 2011 when he's been on the air forever.

PS: I wouldn't say I'm an "expert," but I hope that helps

I understand the purpose of the bumper music. I'm specifically refering to when the show comes back from a break and the bumper music continues to play while the host is talking..........for a while. That leaves loud music and a host talking at the same time. It makes it hard to hear what the host is saying and I see no need for the music once the host starts talking. Someone is obviously doing it deliberatly. I'm wondering if this is some new theory or something. I've heard it mostly on WEEI, but also on 103.3 and 105.7.

Depending on the music being used, it could be
used to pump up the host's overall energy level.
Ideally, the music would be an instrumental, only, and
in proportion to the volume of the host's voice...

I've wondered about the same thing and now believe they are on the payroll to be foils for the hosts. They have to be compensated somehow, no self respecting man would put up with the disrespect that comes their way. You'd have to be a complete moron to keep going back and being made out to be an absolute fool.

Remember when Mike Breen was on Imus as the sports guy and would call in as Bill from White Plains? Pure shtick.

the vast majority are either, nut-cases or jerks.
Keep in mind these people (day after day) are taking the time to call in and wait --for who knows how long-- during 6am-5pm hours. Something's got to up?

I would never call a talk show. Maybe at night for a specific reason but it hasn't happened since the Norm Nathan show maybe 20 years ago. I barely listen to tel-talk now.

The name Steve From Fall River sounds familiar but i don't recognize him....As far as Frank From Gloucester, thank god I don't listen to D&C or The Big Show, so I don't hear him anymore...he was awful. And Danny From Quincy should be told to Shut The F Up and stop yelling. Anything p*sses him off, I would bet that he is a wife beater

Steve from Fall River is "Mr. Negative". He criticizes every Boston team, while claiming to be a fan. He has been humiliated countless times, yet he continues to call. Gustin even did a jingle about him.

I agree about Danny from Quincy. I think he's a real head case. He said once that he graduated from CSB but couldn't find a job in radio. If he's married, his wife has my sympathy.

Just like individuals with many thousands of posts to
message boards, these callers crave attention.
Love 'em or hate 'em, they fancy themselves to be
celebrities...
