Since I am here in the "Lilac City," I can tell you what the main problem was for both stations KQQB/104.5 and KAZZ/107.1..it was their signals. Many times my very nice Bose car radio in my Toyota would simply skip both frequencies when I hit the scan button.....and in-office and listening inside buildings was horrible....IF you can't hear a station---then you're NOT going to listen. Not when there's other top-quality signals in Spokane/Coeur d'Alene and of course satellite radio as well as folks listening to their own ipod's, mp3 players and cd's. KQQB/104.5 is licensed to Newport in Pend Orielle County---almost 50 miles away and their antenna is northwest of Newport, they have a booster here in Spokane with around 4000 watts, but it was spotty at best. And KAZZ/107.1 has their tower north of Deer Park(their city of license) and the signal shoots right over downtown Spokane, they do ok on the northside and on the south hill....but generally you can't hear them very well at all in buildings.
Their idea for the 2 stations was good, to have studios with windows where people could actually see the personalities performing their shows along with a coffee/espresso bar with some food served.....good idea, but after about a 2 year run, and letting go of all the personalities...apparently autopilot just doesn't cut the cake. One of my co-workers actually saw them removing their equipment from the buildiing....they were locked out for non-payment of rent---so I've heard. So it's sad that 2 smaller communities Newport and Deer Park now have NO local radio service...not that the most recent effort of programming the stations even served the audience.....like in rural northeast Washington and northern Idaho, they want to hear an urban CHR?? Don't think so, and KAZZ has always been a dog.....they did jazz, Radio Disney, Music Of Your Life, then when the new folks came along they changed to 70's and 80's, it was fairly listenable---but you couldn't hear the signal.
Be interesting to see if anyone buys these 2 signals.....Clear Channel can only buy another AM, and Mapleton and the KXLY group are also full up with signals. Pamplin sold 101.9/KTSL ad it just went non-com with KLOVE's "Air 1" Christian rock format, and fired all the local talent and now is totally off the bird....there's great local radio, eh??? Maybe Tom Read will buy them and expand his little radio empire.....right now he's got 106.5 and 630 here in Spokane. Weird, here in Spokane we have so many non-coms in the commercial band 101.9/KTSL 104.9/KEEH(Positive Life Radio owned by 7th Day Adventists),
106.5/KSPO (tom read's religious programming) and 107.9/KMBI(Moody Bible Institute's powerful FM). Just odd to see to many non-coms a part of the commercial end of the FM dial.
There's my 2-cents....
