Two stations that I still miss today..................

Oldies 1260 AM.
When it morphed from Adult Standards to Oldies, I found myself listening to it all day. I never got tired of it.
To it's final moments when it briefly was ' The Shuffle '. Sad day for me. Somehow I tolerated their playlist more than others. I wish KRTH would have incorporated some of their music.
The other was Y107, the brief competitor to KROQ. I liked the jockless format and their ID spots sounded eerily similar to what JACK is now doing.
Boo hoo hoo. :(

2 I miss !

Anyone remember KUTE 102? Tight, upbeat, great jocks (Charlie Fox, Joe Green) and a lot of fun!

Also, the old POWER 106....Late 80's, early 90's. One of the great stations in L.A. radio history!

I agree about the Oldies on 1260. I also liked their previous version of Adult Standards as KSURF. They had a broader range of titles and artists, more than after the switch back from Oldies prior to country. Actually I think KRTH has deepened their playlist lately but it isn't likely that they will ever go back as far as 1260 did. As a relacement I suggest, if you can get onto their website try WDJO at: http://www.oldies1160.com/ or RichBroRadio at: http://www.richbroradio.com/main.html. One of my favorite features from AM1260 was John Regan's Doo Wop Shop, which aired on Saturdays and repeated Sundays.

Ah yes, the ol' Power 106 days with Jay Thomas in the Mornings, And Mucho Morales in the Afternoons.
And better music back then on that station.

KRTH 101 of the early to mid 80's is SORELY missed.

Also KFI 640, when it was Top 40 and

The Mighty 690 (San Diego / TJ) , when it was Top 40 back in the early 80's

KRTH had huge playlists then, Nothing like today's repetition and redundancy.

Thanx 4 the links. Shadoe Stevens also had a countdown show on the early phase of 1260 Oldies also, right?
Or am I confusing that with another station?

YES! The Mighty 690! Forgot about that one. That station I could only pick up in my car. Never could receive it at home. Strange little story about it: a cousin of mine who lives in Bakersfield claims to have been able to get a good signal of it there. Of course I didn't believe her. I asked if she was sure, and she quoted jingles and stuff to prove she listened to it. I guess it's possible.
Barely audible here in the SFV, yet receivable in Bakersfield? Hmmmmmmmm. ???

Sure. Pirate Radio and KNAC. How about early 80's KROQ? To me that was a golden time. I absolutely loved the way they put snippets of movies and t.v. shows during intro's to songs. How many times did we hear Dragnet scenes in between songs? ROTFLMAO!
Back then you could hear Ramones, Tom Petty, Talking Heads, Bruce Springsteen, X, and Rush all back to back. Good times.

Since TJ was south south-east of the SFV...the Santa Ana Mtns are the only thing in the way, maybe the Hollywood Hills too. Nevermind, AM signals travel far anyways, if the signal is strong.

You've got the Grapevine Mtns between SF and Bakersfield, can't explain that one.

Remember this from 690: "Clutter Free, the Mighty 690" - one of their famous jingles from about 1980 or 81.
A lot of repetition, but it was Top 40 at the time.

I think they'd play Devo's "Whip it" and other songs maybe 4-6 times a day in late 1980.

The Santa Ana mountains are not in the path between Rosarito, BCN, Mexico, and the San Fernando Valley. Only the Santa Monica mountains are directly in the path. The Santa Anas are actually in parallel and to the East of the path.

The 690 signal is simply not strong enough to compete in LA county except in a small swatch along the coast that benefits from a saltwater path. The 50 kw station on 710 in the SFV pretty much wipes 690 in the SFV anyway.

Any ratings XETRA (Now XEWW) got in the LA book were from lower, coastal OC.

XTRA the Mighty 690 had a very good car radio clear up to Fresno during the day, and that was before the power increase to 77,000 watts.
Another great station of the past was KACY 152 "The Boss Of Beach" The 50,000 watt Port Hueneme signal also hugh the coast to the south and was well receive down into San Diego and clear up to Tahoe City, yet spotty in LA. Allot of famous voices did time in those Dodge road studios.
KNX 1070 NewsRadio before the troups left or tossed out of the building!

How about the older KGGI 99.1 (Riverside?) in the early 80's. One of a kind!

Top 40 radio was it back then..very memorable!

The Mighty 690 had a huge signal. Could've been a 100 Thousand Watts at one time. I could pick them up at night in Sacramento when I lived there. They didn't come in as well as KFI did, but it was pretty loud.

Sacramento...what's that..over 600 miles from the border, amazing! I used to pick up KOMA in Southern California during the overnights. I believe they played oldies in the early 90's? Lots of static though, especially with all the summer lightning going on east of the state into the plains.

Interestingly, I can pick up KNX 1070, here in Colorado Springs (faint and some static) only at night. Picking up traffic reports on the L.A. Freeways is something, considering we only have 1 freeway here (I-25)

Actually, it has been 50 kw at night going back to the old XEAK. It has to aim the signal slightly over the ocean to protect 710 in LA, and 690 in Vancouver, BC. So it has been a marginal LA signal always... just that in the 60's and 70's, the noise level was so much less that it managed to get a little audience. At night, getting to Sacramento is not unusual given the other stuff on the channel.

Sure. Pirate Radio.......

Funny you mention that. I was unpacking a box out in the garage over the weekend and found several brand new Pirate Radio T-Shirts, Bumper Stickers, Balloons and other things from the station that I had forgotten I had.

I don't recall any type of show with Shadoe Stevens. At the onset they did take the Scott Shannon's "True Oldies Channel" from ABC Radio Networks. I did not hear at first because they launched on 540 then added 1260 with Shannon only on in the evenings and local DJs during the day. The Shannon part was supposed to be "custom" voiced for LA but it sounded pretty bad so they went local in the evenings too. I believe 540 at first was all "True Oldies" from the satellite. Also during the original Adult Standards and Oldies they carried Old Time radio programming in the late evenings and Stan Freberg's "When Radio Was".
