Two Views of Talk Radio

Smedge:

What you can't explain with your comment: stations that are putting the talk shows on FM sister outlets are seeing amazing gains...and lower demos on the FM side.

Yes, AM only stations are graying. But that has nothing to do with programming. It has to do with the absolute undeniable fact that nobody under age 45 ever listens to AM for any reason whatsoever! In fact, I would question whether an under 30 something has ever bothered to turn an AM radio station on.

In one such market of which I know, the AM/FM conservative talker has posted over a 10 share Mon-Sun 6 am to Mid among 25-54 listeners. Limbaugh does a 14 plus...Hannity a 14, and so forth. And that's in a home county which voted for the Democrat in the past 3 presidential elections.

AMs death is near (maybe) but talk radio is about to see a boom when more stations move to FM or AM/FM simulcasts.

Hewitt is half right: the market for syndicated hosts is indeed expanding, but only because so many stations are going "on the bird" to cut expenses. :p
