"TXA 21 News" Anchor Named

Kaushal Patel jumps more than 60 markets and joins CBS O&O KTVT/KTXA in Dallas and will serve as an Anchor/Reporter for KTXA's new prime-time newscast that will launch in September from weekend anchor/reporter at KOLD-TV in Tucson.

There had been rumors going around that Jolene DeVito, formerly of TXCN and KXAN in Austin, would fill the posiiton but it doesn't look like that will happen, unfortunately.

Too bad really, I like Jolene and her anchoring style. Why bring in someone who did weekends in another market? Look at CW 33 and the mess they have at 9pm for example.

Seems as if stations everywhere think there is some degree of magic to bringing on an outsider, when in reality a more familiar face moved to a different position most likely would be a stronger draw. Management is alwaya pursuing the elusive big deal, or wanting viewers to perceive it as such, importing talent from across the country to do what more local talent could better accomplish.

In the television business these days talent has to go elsewhere to accomplish anything, since management seems unable to look in its own front yard for good people. But then, nobody can make weak decisions as well as supposedly strong management.

It happens every once in a while, though not often. Paul Magers joining KCBS-2 from Minneapolis' KARE-11 has improved that station's fortunes greatly (they placed #1 at 11:00 in the May ratings book).

Obviously the suits at KTVT liked what they saw in the new anchor and for a start-up newscast on an indy station, it might work.
