Tyler Longview Format change coming???

My guess would be 99.3. I would love to see a 60's-80's classic hits. I have nothing against KDOK - Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel is very well programmed. But Townsquare has done the best that they can do with 1240's signal and audio quality and it will never get any better.

I agree, it's strange that while Rusty has pumped a lot of cash making the Blaze successful, he hasnt done anything to promote 99.3. Whatever he flips it too, 99.3 needs a "live and local" DJ staff with plenty of promotions. "Plug and Play" sattelite formats aint gonna work.

Besides Classic Hits, Classic Rock might be a good choice since 96-X ditched it, or he could even take a shot at The Breeze with CHR.

96X is mainstream rock...a mix of classic, 90s, and current.

70s based classic hits (with some late 60s and early 80s) needs to be on the FM dial. KLUV and KBGO/Waco are some nearby examples of how popular and successful the format can be.

Speculation - 80's hits? Jack? KDOK had abysmal ratings. I just don't see how another music format can be successful on a signal that, during the day barely reaches the east side of Tyler, and at night barely reaches the south side of Longview. Maybe the best use of the signal would be a simulcast of KISX 107.3 for Longview, like what ETRG is doing with KKUS and KFRO. KISX and KKUS have similar signals in Longview. Still, I would hate to see a heritage AM signal like 1240 be relegated back to simulcast status like it was for almost 25 years simulcasting 96X.

kdok1240.com still shows Scott Shannon's TOC.

There's not much you can do with this signal, it's built just to serve Kilgore. I guess it was costing too much to run True Oldies. Hopefully it wont be a talk format (zzzzzz). A simulcast of any of Townsquare's FM's would be a waste of electricity because all of them come in fine here.

I wish Townsquare would sell 1240 to someone local like Jerry Hanszen who'd get a FM Translator as strong as 105.3 is and program it just for Kilgore with high school sports and local news.

kdok1240.com is down now. It shows an EKG of a heart beat and says "and the beat goes on." I doubt Town Square will simulcast. All of their signals cover the area too well to justify that.

The only problem is the FCC requires that AM stations can only be rebroadcast on existing translators, not new ones (should they ever deal with the back-log of current applications.) I don't know of any existing translators in the area that are up for grabs.

Looks like it's an urban format. Positioning is Classic Hip-Hop and R&B. Not sure when it flipped, but as of 9:50am on Monday 2-28 that's what it is. Looks like they kept the KDOK calls too.

I have noticed that as of 20 minutes ago. Musically, it's heavy on the classic hip-hop, but will this format sell well enough for the 18-49 and the 25-54 crowd? Also it's been tried that way here before everything went to FM with astronomical numbers. I can understand that they are calling themselves 1240 The Beat. But with this format, I would say give this about a year, six months at least. Not all youngheads would listen to it on AM though, but probably will listen online. And since KZEY cannot revive to its former glory and KOFY "straddling the fence" format-wise, Townsquare not only "fired" Scott Shannon from its programming lineup at KDOK but decided to put a focus group together to determine a format that is targeting toward an urban audience on AM....that is if there is an audience. You might get less than 1,000 people listening but that's beside the point. The only way to find out after the Spring 2011 book is how well they've dented the audience of Hot 107.3 and The Blaze. I would bet that it may have little or no change. But nevertheless we will see.

When I heard about this, my first reaction was "Who would put this format on AM? It has to sound awful."

This afternoon, I listened in my car using its GM-Bose factory car radio. Being a guy who is over 60, I'm not a big fan of the music, but then I don't think I'm their target listener. That doesn’t matter. To my amazement, it actually sounded pretty good with very solid bass. I’m not sure how they did that, but obviously, Town Square has done some serious upgrading to the facility. That’s good.

Maybe this is a format that can actually work on AM? It will be interesting to see.

Unless Townsquare can resurrect KZEY for a song, or move 1240 to Tyler or it's tower closer to Longview I seriously doubt this new format will have any effect on Hot 107.3 or The Blaze with that signal.

At least this allows 99.3 or any other FM to get Scott Shannon's true oldies if they wanted it now.

Townsquare is also going to have to promote the new station if they hope to survive. I think one of the things that doomed Scott Shannon's TOC was that both GAP and Townsquare did zero station promotion - no billboards, no bumper stickers, no television adverstisements. Most people did not even know that the station existed. AM is the "forgotten" band, and few people find new formats on AM by just stumbling across them. It will be even more difficult getting their target listener to just somehow "find" the new station, as most of the audience in the target grew up with FM and CD's and has no history with AM radio.

If HD radio was a factor, this would be the perfect opportunity for the new format on 1240 to be simulcast on an HD2 subchannel of 107.3. That way, the station could be received in Tyler and Longview, and at night. But HD radio has been such a colossal failure that few stations in ETX have adopted the technology, and few people in the area have HD radios.

I agree, but the art of radio station promotion died with corporate radio. True oldies might have been successful had they put up billboards, gave out bumper stickers (anyone remember them?), maybe some live remotes or newspaper ads.

This new format is a lot of fun, I'm hearing songs I've havent heard in over a decade. But I think it will flop too. It's the wrong format on the wrong stick in the wrong town. :-\ Dumb move Townsquare.

BTW The only station in the Tyler/Longview market running HD is KJLT 102.3.
