Tyler/Longview: KVEE 99.3 to KAJK ?

The FCC database shows KVEE changed calls to KAJK Thursday -- have they changed formats? Calls look "Jack"-like to me...

Uh Oh,
Sounds like JACK Round II is under way!
Paging CJ, Paging CJ, please pick up on Texas thread ;D

It seems like the "Jack"/"Bob" craze died down in the press, but it seems to have only died down in the bigger markets. ABC now distributes a "Jack FM" feed (which I believe is what KOJK "97.3 Jack FM" in OK City uses) and Waitt has a "Bob FM" feed. Abilene (KNCE 96.1), suburban Houston (KWTL 105.3), and Wichita Falls (KWFB 100.9) run the Waitt "Bob FM" one I believe.

As of this writing, www.v993.com is still active and with the "V99-3" moniker and format in place.

I admit I'm not familiar with their on air line-up, but yesterday I caught the tail-end of what sounded like the midday jock saying his goodbyes, and saying that he was going over to sister station "106-9/102-7 The Blaze."

They can't compete with Hot 107.3 JAMZ's signal, so I guess they are going in another direction. Both are very weak Urban AC stations. I would have gone CHR/Pop with the signal, given the fact the market no longer has one. I realize you can pick up K-94.5 out of Shreveport most of the time, but I think it would have a longer life span than a "Jack" station in Northeast Texas.

If this is true (and I have every reason to believe it is), they are still IDing as "K-V-E-E, White Oak/Tyler/Longview" and are still running their V99-3 format jockless as of Saturday afternoon.

Doesn't surprise me that they are changing format, but JACK surprises me. It's not a format that will last a long time. Much like Jammin Oldies did, it will come in and make a big splash and then be time for another format change within 12 to 24 months. That frequency has been a revolving door since they signed on the air. I would think it would be better to pick a format that has some staying power.

On the other hand, I'm sure Reynolds is just trying to save money...as most radio operators are these days. Putting on a syndicated format with no jocks will save him from having to pay a couple of jocks.

KTYL's flip from Jammin' Oldies DID surprise me though when it happened. They were one of the stations still doing well with it. The ratings were pretty good. I realize their ratings with Hot AC are good right now, but I think like in San Antonio and Austin, where the format is still getting decent numbers, it could have still worked in that market. What they are doing now on 107.3 is almost like a hybrid Urban AC/Jammin' Oldies format. It's definitely not your typical Urban AC. Whoever's programming it, doesn't have a clue about the format.

Ah but no format is every perman. Formats that have longevity are the exception not the rule, it seems...

So many comments I'd like to make about KVEE.

Nope, not gonna do it.

I agree with Snoman -- the format K94.5 has in Shreveport has is a good one.

I have a comment, sounds like a JACK call letter to me, and maybe a JACK format too.

Its probably a Jack sounding like a Jill working at an assembly line manufacturing 6 transistor radios.

Does anybody out there know what's going to happen with this station? It sounds like they're going to change to JACK FM

FCC database still shows it as KAJK today...I assume sooner or later it will change.

Interestingly, Clear Channel has apparently flipped its top 40 KPRF 98.7 Amarillo to "Jack" this week. Certainly one of the smallest markets to get a "Jack" adult hits. Also interesting in that I think this is the first CC "Jack" -- they have used their own type of adult hits format on other stations (WLTY "Steve FM" Columbia SC, for example) rather than the "Jack"-branded version. Seems like KAJK would have been ideal calls for KPRF (for "Amarillo's Jack")...

Since Amarillo is one of Clear Channel's "departing markets," I'm thinking an LMA has probably begun on those properties to the new buyer. The buyer probably just hasn't been announced. If anyone in Amarillo has some extra time, I'd love for them to visit the CC stations and take a look at their PI file.

By the way, neither Amarillo nor Tyler are showing up yet as affiliated with Jack on the Jack FM website.
