Tyler Longview Radio Update?

I don't know, but I don't see how much longer he can stay with the talk format on 99.3. Amazing how well he has done with The Blaze, yet 99.3 has struggled with every format tried. Maybe time to try an Oldies/Classic Hits format? I wish we could get Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel on FM.

Conservative talk does well in East Texas. I know 99.3 hasn't shown up much in the ratings, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't billing well.

The problem is that the Reynolds radio group is still running the cheap way like Rick Reynolds instilled in them!! There is no promotion on 99.3. And it desperately needs a local star especially for mornings. There is no draw to the station!! On top of that there is no website for it or The blaze. So you cant listen online and you cant even see what the station is about!! The GM there is a former sales person and has NO programming or promotions experience. This is EXACTLY what happens when sales people take over. They have no clue what programming or promotions are!

I guess your right, they haven't done a good job of promoting it because they actually do have a nice website with online streaming.

I also agree they could do quite well with a local News/Discussion show in the mornings.

Let me expand on my previous statement.

I believe they have local News/Discussion show in the mornings. Some guy Roger Gray. I didn't know that because I haven't listened in the mornings since they dropped Imus.

Click the "Listen Live" button on the webpage.

So back to the original question....(can of worms opened)....Is there truth to the rumor that Reynolds has leased/or trying to lease his stations?

They must have just got the websites back up because they were dead for a REALLY long time. I havent listened to 99.3 in a while because it was some second rate talk stuff that KTBB didnt want. Its like its being programmed by committee. The only good show on the station is Coast to Coast.

If Ken Reynolds is smart he should just go ahead and sell both stations Im sure the Wallers would love to buy them!

Here's some info about Roger Gray, whom I had the pleasure of working with in Houston: www.cbs19.tv/Global/story.asp?S=9857813

Roger is a nice guy, a seasoned radio vet and quite erudite, more so than your average "some guy." He was unceremoniously shown the door after several years by the geniuses over at KTBB.

Roger is a good guy, but his political views tend to lean to the left rather than the right, and for East Texas is so conservative that at the Cadillac dealerships and pickup truck lift kit installers they rip the left hand turn signal out of the socket and only leave a right!!

jd, I just saw this thread, and I appreciate the kind words. And yes, the market leans very far right, but life just isn't that simple. It's called radio and entertainment. If we can keep it interesting and hopefully fun, who knows? Life, even in talk radio, isn't just politics. Maybe that's why Morning Edition has a bigger national audience than Limbaugh, and I had a bigger audience than Hannity at KTBB.

And was number one in talk in Houston for a few years at KPRC.

And I'll continue doing TV at KETK, as well. As for radio, well, I think people are smarter than most programmers give them credit for being. Of course, I could be wrong. Sometimes you have to fight the echo chamber. I often wonder how seasoned, experienced broadcasters can pay silly money to consultants whose only advice is grab yet another conservative syndicated talker.

Now that's creative radio.

Interesting comment since the Spring book is coming up and the change was made relatively late in the Fall. I'm guessing the 600 in your handle explains the tone. We'll give it a shot and see what happens. Luck to everyone.

Roger I have worked in much larger markets that you have ever dreamed of working in! And was on the air in the number one station in market 17, and had top ratings. But you dont seem to understand the one key rule of programming! The market dictates you, you dont dictate the market! With your liberal banter you will never get ratings in conservative East Texas, but yet you think you can force them to listen to a liberal WONT HAPPEN. And speaking of low numbers your ratings speak for themselves. You either need to become neutral or become conservative, because as a liberal you will never get ratings worth selling in East Texas. Stick to tv, leave radio to people that have a clue!

I'll admit that I'm biased, in that I've always enjoyed hearing Roger Gray on the air, whether I agreed with him or not. I also happen to live in East Texas and I'm basically conservative but can't stomach most right-wing radio, whatever that means.

Houston is Market #6, roughly twice the size of the San Diego market, if that matters. But can we stick to the issues at hand without resorting to personal attacks?

In defense of Roger (not that he needs it or asked me to do it)....

I listened to Roger fairly regularly when he was at KTBB.

I, too, call myself a conservative.

A couple things I liked about Roger's show:

1. He seemed to bash both sides when they needed it.

2. He got me to thinking about my own positions and stances on the issues.

Anyone who can do that, IMNSHO, is definitely worth their salt.

I can't speak to 99.3's promotional efforts as I'm not in East Texas right now. But, if Roger is on FM as he was on 'BB, it's a quality product.

If anything, I would characterize Roger more as a libertarian than a liberal. But then, most East Texas rednecks view Libertarians as liberals anyway....

Wow, I just picked up on this thread again on a whim, and saw the screed from 600KOGO, whoever that is. I appreciate someone pointing out the size of Houston. I realize that 30 years in the number 6 market isn't anywhere like working in number 17, but I tried my best. And having the number one talk show in that market and making the Talker's top 100 can't stack up to my critic's comments, but I'll keep plugging away.

May I point out that we don't really have a book yet? I'm not quite getting the ratings comments, but then again, as a neophyte I'm probably just unaware. In my 41st year in this business, I seriously realize I'm still learning, so I appreciate any tutorial. But frankly the criticism is starting to sound like, well, a talk show. Just another political argument. To each his own.
