Looks like KOOI went straight to the crapper while KYKX came up out of it.

Wonder what made BB-AM take a dive (aside from the variances in who receives a book)?

KLJT makes a nice increase. Any thoughts on "The Breeze"?

KDVE up significantly. Are they simulcasting KOYE?

What has 96X done that gave it a nice bump?

(I'm no longer in East Texas, BTW...hence, the observational questions.)

My guess is KTBB-AM took a hit because of the new FM sister.

KZTK-FM should again yank the plug and go oldies or classic rock. Why has Reynolds done so well with The Blaze, yet keeps stinking with 99.3?

I'm surprised the Breeze hasn't made the Top 10.

KOOI's really sinking fast.

Good point. Total up the 5.7 of BB-AM and add it to the 1.8 of BB-FM and you get what BB-AM had the last book: 7.5.

I thought Gleiser's main point of creating KTBB-FM was to get younger listeners. But it looks like part of it's old AM audience split off to the FM side, probably because of Sportstalk. It will be interesting to see if the FM side grows. Clark Howard and Dave Ramsey aren't the match for the powerhouse of Rush and Hannity.

BTW I thought it was disappointing that KZQX or even KPXI (since it puts a decent signal into Tyler) didn't pop up in this book.

Also, where is KDOK? I know that they are fighting with a limited signal that doesn't make much of a dent into Tyler, but you would think that Longview/Kilgore/Henderson could give them enough listeners to show up.

Actually, we (KZQX) did show. Whoever posted it did not get all the results. It is public info at http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb502 among other places. It was disappointing though. 0.5 in 12+, but 12+ that isn't our core audience either.

You need to keep in mind that the entire report is well over 200 pages in length, and has a lot of info in it. The 12+ stuff is fairly meaningless.

There were several things I found odd though, which makes me question the validity of the survey results, at least in the order of things below the median level. For instance it said a significant number of our listeners also tune into The Blaze and also KOYE. I doubt it.

It also said that zero males age 45-64 listen to KZQX. I wonder who those people I speak with on the phone are????

As far as I know KDOK-AM did not show. Some of the problem is the DMA surveyed by Arbitron consists of Cherokee, Gregg and Smith counties. That's nice but a lot of the stations in the area can't be received in all three counties. I suspect that KDOK-AM's coverage area is just a part of Gregg and some of Rusk county. Rusk isn't even considered in the ratings. That makes it hard to make real value judgments about individual stations, especially when you get below #10 or so.

Out of the 36 or so receivable signals in the market, only about 20 showed in the ratings. Of course, with an area as large as the Tyler-Longview market, the number of receivable signals varies depending on where you are located. In some areas there are a lot more, in other areas somewhat less.

Maybe things were better when Tyler and Longview were considered separate markets.

It's a shame, too. Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel is very well programmed, IMHO, and I enjoy listening to it. I think that it would do well on FM, but alas, GAP's FM's are all doing well, so I don't see the fomat moving to one of their FM's anytime soon. As mentioned before, 99.3 would be a good candidate to flip to an 60's to early 80's classic hits format. I don't see how their numbers can get any worse than what they are getting with Talk 99.3.

As far as their coverage is concerned, their daytime coverage reaches into most areas of Gregg, northern half of Rusk, eastern third of Smith, SE Upshur. The nightime coverage is pretty much Kilgore only.

One thing I have noticed about KDOK is that, because they are programmed out of Tyler, most of their commercials target Tyler, and their signal barely reaches east loop 323.

At least they trying to make good use out of the 1240 signal. Prior to flipping to KDOK, 1240 was relegated to simulcasting 96X for 20+ years.

Probably some of the commercials are thrown in as "value added" from the other GAP stations.

I give GAP high marks for doing something with the signal. Before they took over, simulcasting 96-X was pretty much a waste of electricity. It also seems to sound better than it used to.

Gap has improved the sound and the signal of 1240, its getting out further than it used to. I've been able to pick it up past Marshall driving east on I-20 on my Jeep's car stereo.

I wish they could get their signal in to Tyler. I really enjoy the True Oldies programming. Maybe it's just because that music can't be heard on any other frequency in the area.

I think Gleiser changed KDOK 92.1 to KTBB FM because Jack Radio 99.3 went to News/Talk/ Sports format in the same market. KTBB has no Longview penetration to speak of (AM or FM) but the Oldies format on KDOK wasn't generating numbers/revenue either so he hoped to "compete" w/News/Talk in FM format. His old SportsTalk guy...David Smoak...is now doing the same type of show for ESPN AM station in Waco.
