the dreaded 'pink slips' struck Nashville again. (can't figure out why on a Wednesday and not close to a holiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving. Whoever saw this coming?
Cumulus is the latest (we know about) to down-size. As of today, Ron Jordon and Jerry Menshal (I never did get the spelling of Jerry's last name right) have been shown the door.
Just another sign of the times. (SUBJECT: What's ahead for radio?)
These two are great guys, professionals and fun to be around. Ron was the only person at WSM to get listeners for the farm report. When he wasn't there and we had to do it straight, people would call and want to know where he was.
That takes a real talent, and he's got it. If you know of anyone who can use their kind of help, if you'll let me know I'll get the info to them.
Good Luck Guys.

Buddy,

Since the late 90's when Cumulus came to this area, my observation is that they never keep anybody. I recall when they put 106.7 on they were doing an 80's format called "The Planet". As I recall, a day or two before Christmas, at 11:45 AM, all the jocks were called in and let go. What a nice Christmas Present (the pink slip). The format change at 12 Noon to Kiss 106.7, and Urban Oldies format. That didn't last long either.

Sorry to see those two pro news people let go. They were known in this market. Buddy, is Cumulus doom for disaster?

I think I'll stay in my little cubby hole and be happy where I'm at. I feel blessed.

Scott

This is the end, my only freind, the end.
They let the midday girl on WRQQ go today too. Word is they will be putting all 5 of those forsaken properties on the market by the end of the year. Anyone want to buy a bunc hof messed up stations? Guess Columbus knew just when to get out!

the midday girl on WRQQ i say..wasn't that the british girl ?? i haven't listened to anything but VOL STATES STATION in 6 months..seems i heard someone resembling DAPHNE from Fraiser on some station.. ???

By the end of 2008 will there even be twelve local and live people on the air in Nashville?
Sad, sad, sad. I officially really don't like Crumulus now. Even more than before. How could
that be? SELL YOUR STATIONS AND GET OUT OF NASHVILLE. What an absolute waste.

Perhaps you're confusing her with another "foreign" hire, the Wolf's Karen Keeler?

Karen was moved over to RQQ before the morons fired her/
It was possibly the only good part of another waste of a frequency
and failure.

Cumulus is not the kind of company you want to bet your career on for more than a year.
Because chances are you won't be with them more than a year.
Cumulus is not the kind of company you want to work for and buy a home.
Just leave the real estate sign in the yard. you'll be moving soon.
Cumulus is not the kind of company you want to work for and have a family.
Your kids will be moving to a different city and school. starting all over with new friends, new challenges.
Cumulus is not the kind of company you want to work for and have a stable life.
If your lucky, your wife likes to pack and move numerous times. Find a good divorce lawyer. Buy your own U-Haul truck, it's cheaper.
Cumulus is not the kind of company you want to work for period.
And you wonder why radio is getting a bad rap.

I worked with both Ron and Buddy at WSM when I came back to town in 94 and both are top notch guys! Sad to see so many great broadcasters out of work! Seems no one is safe from the ax now days. Wonder who will be next?

At least Buddy got to retire. That only happens to 1/10 of 1% these days.
Ron Jordan was great on WTN. Do these people really believe the audience
won't notice?

Let's see, CC cuts, Chitadel cuts and again Crumcuts. That's 70% of the market
virtually on auto pilot. Next thing they'll do is sign off at 7:00 to save electricity.

How's those ad rates going?

Ron had a classic news man style with a quick wit...he fit in great on WTN mornings. The audience will know for sure!

Looks like its a good time to be Cromwell! If Cume-less is indeed going to sell off the cluster, I'd have to think Cromwell is interested in at least 1 or 2 of those signals.
Buzz to 97.1? Party to 102.9?
Leave Buzz at 102.9, move Party to 97.1?

Okay, I'm confused here. Crumulus fired WSM-AM staffers? I though the LSA between the Cumulites and Gaylord ran out back in the spring.

When listening to 95.5 they had a commercial with Karen Keeley on it and she said she would be at Coyote Uglies on Friday. Well they let her record this commercial knowing they were going to ax her, and then proceed to play it on the air...how silly.

Also of course people are going to know that Ron Jordan and Jerry Minshall are not on the air. Especially when WTN in the afternoon had no local news at the top of each hour.

Bout time for CC to do there cutting, two months.

Mr. Harmon

You have said it best about Cumulus (ran by the Dickey Brothers in the back ground). They have a BAD history (The Dickey Family) in this business. They are crude, rude, and MEAN.

Lew Dickey is a jerk on the phone. I have had only had 1 dealing with him and HOW RUDE of a man he was to me over the phone.

Don't you fellas (and gals) worry. When his time comes to meet his maker, God has documented every bit of what he and Cumulus has done to people that have worked for them and how it had effected thier families when they were let go for NO REASON! This goes for David, John, Mike, and the whole Dickey bunch, hiding behind Cumulus!

As someone who worked for them for about a year & a half,..I can honestly say Cumulus is the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel..not only are the Dickey brothers rude, crude, and mean, hiring losers like Jan Jeffries & Jim Kennedy to supervise their programming also makes them DUMB..

Ron and Jerry will stay busy doing voice-overs, and I'm sure Karen will continue to pursue her singing career...you can't keep talented people down for long...as for the Dickey brothers,...I hope they get Cancer

I never worked directly with Jim Kennedy, but I met him a few times, and he seemed nice, as in a room with the Dickey Brothers and Kennedy, with someone singing, "One of these things is not like the other..." I also heard people say they liked Jim Kennedy. Maybe he is like the rest of them, but I never saw it or heard it until now.

Jan is a different story. And even Jan was nice to a point, but you can't trust him. Jan's big thing in every meeting was, "I worked at WLS." But what he didn't say is he worked for WLS-FM, not the heritage AM. If you look up WLS in Wikipedia, you'll see that WLS changed formats as many times at WRQQ does! And part of that has Jan's fingerprints all over it!

I will never understand how radio hires people who are evidently capable of doing the job , then radio tells us how they want it done, and we know better but if we do it our way we get fired, yet when the ratings drop because we did it their way we get fired. Not to mention we get punished with a non-compete because we did our job as we were told. Again, I had the highest ratings WRQQ ever had when Jan was stripped of OM/PD duties, but nobody noticed what I did, because Jan pretended he was still running the show.

Me: Jan, do you know how I went from a 6 share to a 10 share?
Jan: No.
Me: No, I didn't think you would.

With all of the cutting going on, it seems like revenue would drop severely. Does anyone think that just as quickly as they cut Jocks because of budget cuts, they will be as quick to call for live personalities again when the books come in and they see that advertising has all but ceased to exist?
