...hiring losers like Jan Jeffries & Jim Kennedy to supervise their programming also makes them DUMB..

I never worked directly with Jim Kennedy, but I met him a few times, and he seemed nice, as in a room with the Dickey Brothers and Kennedy, with someone singing, "One of these things is not like the other..." I also heard people say they liked Jim Kennedy. Maybe he is like the rest of them, but I never saw it or heard it until now.

Jan is a different story. And even Jan was nice to a point, but you can't trust him. Jan's big thing in every meeting was, "I worked at WLS." But what he didn't say is he worked for WLS-FM, not the heritage AM. If you look up WLS in Wikipedia, you'll see that WLS changed formats as many times at WRQQ does! And part of that has Jan's fingerprints all over it!

I will never understand how radio hires people who are evidently capable of doing the job , then radio tells us how they want it done, and we know better but if we do it our way we get fired, yet when the ratings drop because we did it their way we get fired. Not to mention we get punished with a non-compete because we did our job as we were told. Again, I had the highest ratings WRQQ ever had when Jan was stripped of OM/PD duties, but nobody noticed what I did, because Jan pretended he was still running the show.

Me: Jan, do you know how I went from a 6 share to a 10 share?
Jan: No.
Me: No, I didn't think you would.

Hell Beatlenut --- we all know you never got a six share twice, much less a ten at Crapulus Nashville.
Everyone knows anything over two is a fireable offense. You'd still be there basking in the glory
with Jan if you took WNFN to the great shares it's gotten the last two years. That's a sign of
Crumulus success and growth.

"0.9? Wow! Keep up the good work."
"and next time let's go for a 0.4 and really show 'em."
" While you're at it would you fire everyone at 95.5 and 99.7, we don't want anything above a
one in their frequency. It's against company policy. Like playing more than 11 80's hits or having
more than one paid for commercial a week"

What a joke! I miss Ron and Jerry. And Karen.* This is NOT right. My wife even cried when I told
her. She's waiting for Christmas music after the election.

* I cannot listen to RQQ. But regardless. Karen's still on the website. Maybe it's a mistake. She'll come
back. Hire her SCRG. Save her from the evil empires "C's".

At least Buddy got to retire. That only happens to 1/10 of 1% these days.
Ron Jordan was great on WTN. Do these people really believe the audience
won't notice?

Let's see, CC cuts, Chitadel cuts and again Crumcuts. That's 70% of the market
virtually on auto pilot. Next thing they'll do is sign off at 7:00 to save electricity.

How's those ad rates going?

That sounds like a novel idea, signing off the air at 7PM. Who would of thought of the concept of a daytime FM? The irony is you are probably right on target with that assessment.

Tippy2, I appreciate your humor that followed the above quote from your post, but you left me thinking you don't believe I got that 10.0 AQH (and at WRQQ of all places). In the summer of 2002, Women 18-34. I was #2 right behind Barbara Britches. Jan came in the studio, didn't say a word, stretched out his arms and gave me a hug, then he thanked me. I found out later what it was all about. Then he hired a PD, the ratings fell back down, they fired the PD, and shortly after that, they fired me.

I got a 9.5 AQH, Spring 2007, Adults 25-54, in Clarksville. So I must be doing something right.

And I never said I had a 6 share twice. My numbers were still growing because I was doing radio right. I also got a 3-month severence. Try finding that in a Cumuless contract these days.

I know you did well, when Star sounded it's best and you had assembled a good sound and team.
It lasted way to short. I was attempting to put a laugh into another tragic event caused by basic
insanity.

I tell you, seriously, these folks may have billions, but they could have had trillions. They are
getting 30% of what they could have if they had formulated a better operating system.

It's sad to see so many people come through a place, but I have to ask, as of 2008, anyone
trying to work for them should know it's impossible to last.

Tibbs, thank you for your comment. I was unsure if it was a true slam because of the nature of the rest of your post (the comic relief). I believe most, if not all, of us are in radio because of some kind of insecurity factor. Oddly enough, it's having the opposite effect now. For those still in radio, they are becoming more and more insecure. So I had to validate my position with some numbers. Forgive me if I sounded pretentious, because that's not the real me.

This board is a bit cathartic. I hope Radio-Info doesn't start charging a fee for psychiatric help. Or when used as a laxative.

\..I hope they get Cancer

Over the line? Hardly. As we all know, the ACS wants everyone to remember the seven warning signs of cancer. Take a look at the continuing list of layoffs and remember that cancer comes in many different forms. As a reminder, here are the other seven warning signs of cancer: Mr. and Mrs. Lewis W. Dickey, Sr and their five children, including the brothers collectively known as the "Dickey Brothers", Lew, John, Mike, etc.

Not that there is any Rhyme or Reason to the radio world, or any business now days, but how was the decision to get rid of Ron, Jerry and Karen made? Were they making the big $$'s? Chris Petty, former afternoon news anchor is now preforming morning anchor duties. How did they decide to keep him and not Ron, to do the job Ron was doing? I do not listen to 97.1 but did anyone take Karens shift?
I guess I just do not understand big business, but then again sometimes big business does not understand big business.

Don78,

In today's radio world, it doesn't have to make sense. Follow the money. Read the stories on Radio-info before checking out the boards. Nearly all, if not all, of the radio giants are losing money their share holders don't want them to lose and are making cuts.

One of the quick ways is to downsize, then consolidate, then wipe your brow, scratch your butt, check and see if you still have your job and whether they've taken away your key to the mens room. It's funny in that strange sort of way, but having been there, it makes good business sense if you don't know anything about radio. Those who know something about radio and are forced to make these decisions also feel the pain...but with a family to support, kids in school and college, have to look out for number one. Often, in management a difficult decision HAS to be made that doesn't fit with personal feelings, but those times come.

By the way, Chris Peddy, who also worked weekends with us at WSM is doing a split shift on am and pm drive I've been told.

We now return you to your regular programming.

anyone else see Buddy on the Titans/Green Bay coverage on FOX Sunday?
final drive of the 4th quarter...Titans finally moving the ball to attempt a game-winning
field goal...the crowd is going crazy...and there's Buddy on the side line...nice close-up...
laughing and talking with someone. Buddy! you were 10 feet from the game!
watch the game!

only been at WHIN little more than a month..and already scored that sideline press pass...i knew he didn't go for the $$$$ ;D

Boy this would have been news on here if it was Monday Night Football and WHIN was juicing up that power.
More importantly, Chris...Buddy's a cheerleader? We know why we all really watch football. ;D

weird: in HD, I could see the initials "CC" on it...hmmmmmmm

Buddy! you were 10 feet from the game! watch the game!

Chris....at that level, unless the play is at least on the 20...you have to watch it on the jumbo tronto get a good view. I could see it from there...but when the camera is on you...you have to look cool. Did I look cool? ;D ...and nooo, the officer is a friend of mine, he wasn't there to arrest me.

delta.....no letters on it, cc or otherwise. I also do a Titan update on whin. Same pass I've had for past 10 years.

sorry chris...thought that came from delta. no it wasn't a cc, it was a cr....it was one you would have had!

Same pass I've had for past 10 years. i still have my WHIN press pass from 1974..lol.. one of the only two "PERMANENT"..press box passes to the GHS press box dated 1970..and a third class radio license...all that's left of a once meteoric rise to the shell dinner hour.. ::)

Cumulus is just a business and when businesses don't do well for WHATEVER reason, they need to cut expenses to survive. Don't lie...you'd do the same if you had no other choice. Personnel is easy to control. They probably did what they had to in order to survive. Sure, good people got canned. This is radio...it happens to all of us. I wish them well but my guess is they went into this business knowing that it's extremely unpredictable when it comes to longevity.

For the record, the conversations I've had with the Dickey's have been pleasant, cordial and very informative...and yes, I've been let go before also. I dealt with it. Radio is in survival mode right now and we probably will get to the point where every daypart will be automated and every station function will move to some big corporate office. Local radio will virtually disappear until one day, some yahoo will crack open a mic when their satellite fails and lo and behold, local radio will be reborn. Until then, this is how it's going to be. My suggestion, find a different career if this upsets you. Either that or...be patient and then be the yahoo who figures out local radio sounds good again.

Anybody got a continuous loop of Buddy on the sidelines running on youtube yet?
We could put some cool disco behind it. Especially if he's walking down the sidelines
with authority.

Is this possibly a CC publicity stunt?
