On the U.S. Golf Association website, there is a page with a brief historical look at the U.S. Open Golf tournament. It notes that the first live telecast was in 1954, but did not indicate what network broadcast the coverage.
Given the primitive and bulky nature of television remote equipment at the time, I would think live coverage was probably limited to the 17th and 18th holes with four or five cameras overall. If the 17th and 18th fairways at that year's venue were parallel to each other, the network could have built a tall scaffolding tower that would allow TV cameras to swing around to catch action on both the 17th and 18th fairways.
Otherwise, there were probably two cameras on a scaffolding next to the 17th hole (to cover the 17th fairway and 17th green) hole and two more atop a scaffolding next to the 18th hole (to cover the 18th fairway and 18th green).
A far cry from how NBC will cover the 2006 Open at Winged Foot, with cameras at all 18 tees, fairways, and greens.
