UB BULLS FOOTBALL BROADCASTS

What's the word on the broadcast team for the UB game day broadcasts?

Is Paul Peck still doing play by play?

Whose filling the other slots?

The University at Buffalo radio football team will have a similar sound in 2011 as the Bulls return to the airwaves on both 1230-AM in Buffalo – "The Breeze," as well as "Hot Talk" 1280-AM in Rochester.

Calling all the play-by-play action of Bulls football for his 12th year, and fourth consecutive, will be WIVB-TV's Paul Peck. Serving as the analyst for the second straight season will be Navy's all-time leading passer and former Western New York Player of the Year Jim Kubiak. Nick Mendola will return to his sideline duties in 2011 and will also file profiles on Bulls' players in the Bulls hour-long pregame show each week.

The new face in the Bulls broadcast lineup is Scott Wilson, who has worked at both WECK and WGR as host and producer and also served on the UB women's basketball broadcast team last season. Wilson will host the Bulls pre- and post-game shows on the Bulls football broadcasts and will also serve as the host of the "Jeff Quinn Show" that will air on Thursdays on "Buffalo's Breeze" 1230-AM.

Any word on who will be the sponsors for the UB football games?

I'm trying to recall who were the major advertisers for football and basketball games on WECK last year but I'm drawing a blank.

Just curious if the change in format impacted any of last year's advertisers from not returning for this season and if they may have actually added one or two new clients since going from all talk to music earlier this summer.

While UB probably depends on WECK for engineering help and some announcing talent (like Brad Riter and Nick Mendola last season), I'm pretty sure the UB Athletics Department is responsible for selling most of the advertising during Bulls broadcasts. The sponsors I hear on the air are the same ones you see posted around the stadium and in the game day programs. So, I think UB athletics is selling it all as one package. Again, this is just conjecture on my part. Perhaps the WECK sales team (do they have one yet?) might bring in a couple of sponsors. But I think UB athletics on WECK is much like the Bisons on KB, in that UB is probably paying WECK to air the games and then makes money off the sponsorships. I don't think UB football is popular enough to demand rights fees from stations, like the Bills get from 97 Rock and the Sabres get from WGR. One thing I can say for sure is that the format change from talk to music is irrelevant to companies deciding whether to sponsor UB football.

The first pre game show left a lot to be desired. The technical glitches ( dead air) along with guffaws by the host and Mendola's almost inaudible locker room interviews left room for a lot of improvement. Even Paul Peck's comment that the Pitt offense was huddled around Coach Quinn ( The Bulls Coach) was amusing....OK...There is always next week in football....and radio.

There are only so many corners that can be cut in staffing and tech before the product begins to suffer. UB is a D1 sports program. Sounds like W**K's performance also gets a D.
