UCLA signs with KABC (!)

It's too bad that KEIB won't grab up the available KRKD call letters The two standalone towers with KRKD emblazoned on both, are still standing downtown due to historical preservation. Why not capitalize on that and bring back some SoCal radio history.
Those calls, to me, were always pronounced as "Crooked". And since call letters are irrelevant for the most part today, why bother?

What percentage of Southern Californians today would know who Wally George was or even former mayor Sam Yorty?
Start with most of the roughly 5 million Hispanics who are mostly newer arrivals or too young. Then think of the other ethnic communities such as the Persians, Armenians and those from Asia. By the time you do the math, it is a very tiny percentage of people who recognize those names, and even fewer who know who they were.

These are common issues in markets where everyone is from somewhere else... LA, Phoenix, Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, Nashville and so on.

Or 'Cracked'...Considering those calls disappeared in 1970, another reason to why bother.

Maybe some one can answer this...Could the the 2 towers be made to transmit an AM or FM signal again? I wonder if they could be put to use again.

If they are still electrically sound, they could be used for AM (the towers themselves are the transmitting antennas for that mode), provided there is still a ground system in place, or one could be created.

If not electrically sound but physically solid, they could conceivably be used for FM, but the service contour from downtown would be miniscule compared to Mount Wilson or the other elevated sites.

Maybe a lot has changed but last I heard college athletic programs get paid for the broadcasting rights, not the other way around.
That article is from 13 years ago. At that time, basically no schools at Fresno State's level would regularly be on TV. That has changed with the advent of streaming.

My understanding of how deals with Learfield are often structured:
1. Learfield buys multimedia rights from the athletic department (school gets paid)
2. Learfield sells ads during radio broadcasts, jumbotron ads, etc. in concert with the athletic department
3. Learfield solicits radio stations to bid on the broadcasts. If there are no bidders, they will buy time from anyone willing.

I've never worked with a school that uses JMI Sports, so their business model could be somewhat different.
