UConn Men's Sports on SNY

I saw a commercial on SNY for it yesterday. Frankly it's a disgrace. UCONN - University of Connecticut Huskies on SNY - Sports Net New York. And COX Cable does not carry SNY. That means residents of Southington, Meriden, Cheshire, Manchester, Rocky Hill, Newington, Enfield, Glastonbury, East Granby, etc won't be able to see the games unless COX pops the SNY onto their own COX Sports TV on Channel 2 for the games or on one of the Leased Access Channels - 72 or 74.

Why a disgrace? The locals basically had to "put up or shut up." Obviously they didn't have what it takes. Maybe if they invest more in their local product, they will get the games back someday.

What this comes down to is that COX and SNY will have to deal for carriage - simple as that. Now SNY has compelling programming (to subs) it thus finally holds the cards in this situation. They'll inevitably work out a carriage deal. That deal may result in some nasty collateral damage that you will not like.....but it will happen.

Interesting choice for UConn, actually. Rather than going with a New England-based sports network, they went in the other direction. And, the article that Bill kindly posted a link to shows that they did this deliberately. There is some logic in it, I suppose. Aside from Rutgers, the New York metro area is underserved when it comes to regional NCAA 1-A football action. Most other large markets have local coverage of multiple 1-A football teams. UConn is making moves to increase that exposure in the nation's biggest market. And, the basketball coverage is a natural fit as well.

It makes sense as far as dollars and cents goes, though it means they have probably ceded the rest of New England to Boston College.

Pretty big move when you look at the geography of it. For decades, Connecticut has been the northeast's version of 'fly over country' between New York and Boston. This is an attempt to change that as far as college athletics go - and UConn has developed their product to the extent that they can walk the walk. It's certainly not unprecedented, Notre Dame has thorough local coverage in Chicago and South Bend is easily as far from Chicago as Storrs is from midtown Manhattan. Granted, ND has far more history as far as athletics go....but it's a strong move on the part of UConn.

As an alum, I approve - even if I am no fan of the New York area. It will undoubtedly draw players and money from that huge and relatively untapped market.

Cox needs to add SNY no if or buts about it. UCONN is huge in Connecticut. And by Cox adding it they will say we need to raise prices. Which is a bunch of BS as they have dropped channels from regular cable such as CMT, TCM. The money Cox wastes on putting Cox Sports channel together and stuff that money can go to much usful things. It took them forever to add NESN to the Meriden Cox area. If I had a say I would say just dump YES for SNY ;)

As for UCONN whatever happened to the deal they had with WTNH and before that WTXX ? I remember the days I could watch UCONN on WTXX. What do they have to show on the weekends thats worth watching? Sister station WPIX still airs Mets games.

Also, didn't CPTV even carry the occasional UConn women's basketball game on a Sunday afternoon?

Does COX plan on adding this network so people can see UCONN football and basketball? Any news on it.

Not as of yet. COX is missing a lot of good networks besides SNY. They're missing Centric and GMC, both which show some old school programming. (GMC stands for Gospel Music Channel. At one time they were mostly Gospel Music Videos on the channel, but they have since evolved into a general entertainment network with a just a few hours of Gospel Music a week). Also they don't have FOX Movie Channel.

They are talking with SNY as of right now from what I heard. Cox always has been slow with adding networks worth something. Can we say NESN took forever. Anyways while reading this topic again I went to the Cox website to check out the channel line-up. The list starts at CHANNEL 3 which is WFSB. What no more CHANNEL 2 which was Cox Sports? They should at least place QVC there or something no need in skipping that channel number. Wait while looking the the line-up I noticed they have added SNY on CHANNEL 62. Not sure what 62 was before, wait wasn't it Turner Classic Movies? Glad to see they added SNY, if Cox said no to that channel you would have seen a ton of unhappy UCONN fans.

Right before Court TV re-branded as TRU-TV they moved Turner Classic Movies to Digital Channel 162 and Court TV moved from analog Chanel 71 to analog channel 62. A few months ago they moved it to analog channel 96. Channels 71-75 became Digital only. And then they added digital only 76-78 and 82.

The new line-up with SNY on 62 and no more COX Sports Television took effect on 9/12. This was on all 3 Connecticut Systems - Glastonbury, Meriden, and East Granby. Yet the East Granby system still does not carry The Yes Network. And the Meriden system does not have ShopNBC which is on Digital Channel 81 on both The Glastonbury and East Granby Systems. Apparently there's no Analog Channel 2 or 23 any more.

Cox never skipped channels before. Surprise they are now with 2 and 23. And surprise they took away their own Cox Sports Channel which is still avaiable in MA and RI.

And I don't see why they don't just place Tru TV on CHANNEL 31 and QVC on CHANNEL 8 which both Glastonbury and East Granby systems have it on along with the MA system. Seems it would make perfect sense. Not sure what to place on CHANNEL 2.

Then as for SNY surprise they didn't place it near another sports channel as Comcast Sports Net NE has been alone on 51 for quite awhile. Could have seen maybe 52 become SNY and moving MTV to 62 right next to VH-1.

I doubt it will be missed by many being gone from CHANNEL 2. It just a usless channel in my opinion.

Now the only place SNY isn't avaiable is on Charter in the Wilimantic area which is really sad as their close to the campus. I thought they would be getting SNY no problem and it would be Cox not stepping their game up.
