I learned tonight from credible sources that UCTV (University of California Television) will be signing off its satellite channel after a twelve year run by the end of the month. UCTV served as an aggregator of television programming from the campuses and research facilities of the University of California and was produced through the facilities of UCSD-TV here in San Diego. The sign-off is coming as a result of the severe budget deficit here in California. They will continue to provide programming through Roku and video streaming on the Internet.
UCTV was carried throughout the country by non-commercial public television stations and on Dish Network. It carried a wide variety of programming including medical lectures, scientific presentations, and cultural and music programs.
UC San Diego's low power analog television station (on analog channel 35) will continue on the air, and is carried by local cable TV systems either in its entirety or redacted for other local cable system programming.
