UH Merging KUHF Radio and KUHT TV

Holy cow !! Check this out.

http://culturemap.com/newsdetail/01-20-11-university-of-houston-to-merge-kuhf-and-channel-8-create-unified-houston-public-media/?utm_source=CultureMap&utm_medium=twitter

I don't think this has anything to do with KUHF's efforts to buy KTRU from Rice University. Or does it?

Whatever, merging Houston Public Radio and TV, and acquiring another FM outlet for KUHF's arts programming is going to major changes in Houston's news and cultural arts broadcast landscape.

Wow.

The article says "first of its kind"...isn't KERA TV and its two FM stations in Dallas operated under one organization?

Yes, but they started out as the same organization.

Mississippi Public Broadcasting is another one that operates under a single organizational structure.

I think this is a good move for both stations for a variety of reasons. They will end up with some cost savings by having a single organization rather than two as well as better cross-promotion abilities.

Go back and re-read the original posting on this

The original news item on Culture Map dot com never said it was "the first of its kind." It said the new and combined public radio and TV operations is "believed to be ONE OF THE FIRST" of its kind.

The Chronicle story on the merger quoted Ed Hugetz, UH's associate vice chancellor for planning and outreach, as saying "the merger of Channel 8 and KUHF is modeled on similar structures at several public broadcasting operations, including KERA in Dallas-Fort Worth and at KPBS in San Diego, which is owned by the University of San Diego."

So let us please stop quibbling over this "first of its kind" business. It's clearly not the first and nobody ever said it would be.
