UK Sports

We never have a problem selling ads, so it isn't as if we are in a "down" advertising market in general. In fact just about the only time we get a flat "no" when we call on clients is when we talk about UK.

When I was in Georgia, I tell you what we sold the slap dog crap out of....high school football. One station I was at we had a Friday night game of the week. I had a stack of carts (remember those) for most games and if an advertiser had his spot air twice during a quarter, he was lucky. University of Georgia football was almost sold out. However when Georgia had a down year (remember the 90's) we didn't have advertisers bailing on us. Considering how bad UK's football program is, I would think they would expect them to suck.

Have you checked into U of L games yet?

I don't think Corbin is much of a factor in not being able to sell it really. I say that only because nobody has mentioned it, and our advertisers are usually pretty vocal when they are spending money elsewhere. Also, I didn't hear anybody from our area run during their games.

We do sell a lot of high school football. Last year was an election year, so it was busier than a normal year, but Spindoctor got a little terse with me and told me to stop selling ads because he didn't have room to schedule them. Haha then I reminded him who signs his checks, and told him to go back to the back and lay down on his hay. I can't try that this year though, because he and our bookkeeper will gang up on me then I won't get a paycheck! :)

I haven't checked into U of L yet...I delegated that to spindoctor...but now that you mention it, I'll ask :)

Of course, that's a good thing. That's also when you raise your rates!

Let me know how it goes. I have a client in eastern Kentucky that is interested in Louisville sports and I don't think they have called either. Need to jump on it, 1 month and 15 days until the season starts!

Could the difficulty in selling radio time for UK broadcasts by some stations have anything to do with the fact that the UK Network has 50,000 watt stations in Louisville (WHAS) and Cincinnati (WCKY)? Those two outlets can heard not only statewide, but also in over half of the states in the nation. Maybe a potential advertiser thinks if listeners are going to listen on the radio, they will tune to one of those high-powered outlets. Just a thought.

The 50kw blowtorch theory isn't as relevant today. At one time it was nice to have the skywave but it's old school technology compared to the internet. Plus, most people under 40 who do listen to radio use FM.

Also 1530 isn't that good of a signal. During the day the signal goes out 50 miles strong and 80 miles or so listenable and the night signal is directional to the east following Sacramento sunset, nice and loud on the east coast but hardly any signal in Western Kentucky. WHAS is better, strong for about 100 miles during the day and another 50 beyond that listenable before it becomes a challenge. The night signal has a skywave cancellation ring affecting cities like Owesnboro and Bowling Green. Of course this is assuming you're listening away from computer monitors, florescent lights, bad power transformers and other Part 15 demons.

Great question!

Last year was an especially difficult year selling UK football because sponsors would pull their ads when the team lost a game. (Same goes for Bball) Personally I thought it was ridiculous.
A new coach would give some confidence I would think, whether FB OR BB.
maybe?

Now, those are some really weird clients... The pull their ad's, based on how the team plays from week to week???

Welcome to Southeast Kentucky!
That is exactly what happens and in a smaller market I have to honor the request or risk losing future revenue.

Go with U of L sports. Both football and basketball are much stronger across the boards. UK's football problems can be traced to Adolph Rupp, who chased out Bear Bryant years ago over funding problems. Rupp was the AD at UK at the time! Facts!
