Ultrasonic Receiver and Dish for chasing Power Line Noise

Midnight Science has just unveiled a small dish that will convert their Ultrasonic Detectors in to a directional receiver, for tracking arcing on Power Poles and such. Someone asked here, a while back, about using something similar to check for air leaks in a pressurized line, too.

Also note, they have added Marv Loftness's book, "The AC Power Interference Handbook" to their store...I highly recommend it.

Any interested DIYers can also make one of these - a web search for ultrasonic arc detector will lead to the excellent article by James T. Hanson (W1TRC), in which he describes exactly how to build one. The title is "A Home-made Ultrasonic Power Line Arc Detector" and it was published in the April 2006 edition of QST.

A friend built one out of a solar cooker from Edmunds Scientific. Mike element in the focus point, small amp to drive headphones. He can spot not only the noisy pole, but also where the arcing is on the pole.
