UNC-TV adds a new station

I'm inclined to agree with you here. My first thought is that you need more transmitters in mountainous terrain, and indeed UNC-TV now has three full-power stations, plus umpteen translators in the NC mountains.

However, the new station STILL leaves the southwestern tip of the state without OTA coverage by UNC-TV. While the network covers just about everything else in the state, including Manteo, its full-power station coverage falls somewhere short of Murphy.

Where the new station DOES reach is important. Knoxville, Tennessee really needs to get a stable picture of UNC-TV, not to mention Greenville, South Carolina. Those places have people...and $$$.

Later . . . .

From the specifications, this new station looks more like an upgrade of the existing translator in Canton (different channel and slightly higher power). It probably improves the coverage a bit and ensures that they can't be bumped (translators are a secondary service). That might be important if spectrum re-packing comes to fruition.

One thing WUNW will do is make it possible for UNC-TV to demand a second channel on Direct and Dish in the large (DMA #36) Greenville-Spartanburg market. By placing a subchannel such as UNC Ed on the primary carrier on WUNW, they will be able to claim it as a unique service, as they've done in other markets--then they'll have 2 channels on the sat services. BTW, UNC-TV is already easily availble in Greenville and Spartanburg OTA and via cable from WUNF-TV
