PBRTV reports that Uncle Dougie wasn't on the air today and his picture has been removed from WPTT and WJAS websites. I checked it out myself and Uncle Dougie is off the website. Any speculation?

Uncle Dougie Gone?

Doug Hoerth in my opinion is a very talented personality. I have listened to him since he arrived in Pittsburgh in 1980. I have followed him up and down the dial as he went from station to station. He is truly one of a kind. A true individual both on air and off. I respect and admire the way he conducts his business. His knowledge of music and entertainment is unbelievable. The way he shares his personal life with his listeners is always interesting.
However, his show began to "jump the shark" if you will when Lawrence Gaines began producing his shows on the old 1250. Lawrence began to think that he was the star of the show and suddenly the callers didn't seem to matter as much nor did Doug. The show became a dialogue between Lawrence and Doug with Lawrence trying to take over the show. When Doug moved to 1360, I was hoping for a return to the "old
Doug" and to a certain degree it happened, but he still relies on his current producer for dialogue a bit too much.
Here's hoping that if Doug moves to another station in Pittsburgh he will go back to the days when it was just him spewing his genius solo. I would hope he would do more interviews as well. No one locally can touch him as a radio interviewer. He prepares for each interview and it shows. When I listen to him interviewing a politician, author or entertainer I often wondered why he wasn't in a bigger market. He is that good of an interviewer. As for him ging to B-94, I don't see it happening. He is a talented disc jockey as well, as his Sunday night oldies show proves, but he is not a top 40 DJ. He doesn't fit the demographics, nor would he lower his standards to play the garbage B-94 plays. ( Although his show may have worked on the Zone).
I want to wish him well and thank him for all he has taught me and for entertaining me all these years. Thank you Uncle Dougie. I hope we haven't heard the last of you.

I was thinking the same thing. And Citadel says they are going to syndicate Imus' show in tape delay in some markets.
Doug can come to Tampa Bay. He would fit right in and bring his oldies show to WJQB . There are a lot of women in Tampa bay who groove on his dead on impressions of B. Mitchell Reid and Dan Ingram. We love You DOUGIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

His contract ran through December 31, but it wasn't renewed, so he left the airwaves a little early.
If I was Doug and I knew my contact wouldn't of been re-newed I would at least tell my listeners goodbye or just bashed management for letting me go, he is already essentially fired.....
From what I hear he was let go because of ratings, I don't think that is particularly Doug's fault even though he was past the sell by date, Renda could of promoted him better or worked with Doug to bring up ratings and target new listeners.......

Could they have promoted him more? Yes. Renda does very little promotion for WPTT and I believe thinks it is a lost cause.
However, could they have worked with him to attract new listeners? Doubtful. Hoerth was very set in his ways and was reluctant to change.

You're right about Doug set to his own ways..But I would think with Doug's groupies he would do well given he is on a station that can only be heard in Renda's parking lot and a station that isn't promoted at all.....
What are you going to promote? "If you loved Doug in 1987, you'll love him in 2007 because he's telling the same stories?"
I never listened to WPTT because I am at work, but I listened to the Sunday night Doo-Wop show and I think WJAS is making a mistake. The calls and e-mails indicated there is a market for this. With or without Dougie, that music needs to come back.
The audience for doo wop is over 60, which is poison to advertisers. Even CBS-FM in New York dumped its Doo Wop Shop show several years ago.

2) Renda has a station for 25-54-----WSHH
3) It was once a week-----not a format flip
4) Doo-wop radio practically started in Da Burg------Remember Porky Chedwick on the old WAMO AM with studios in Homestead.
5) Dougie was niche programing like a Dixieland show would be on WDUQ or the Sinatra show on WJAS.

I'm not a Hoerth fan and I agree with Boss that Over 60 is not a great demographic.
However, it would seem to me that Doo-Wop, Polka, Big Band, etc. do have listeners and this would be a good fit for an AM station.
Hey, Funeral Homes, banks wishing to promote retirement accounts, doctors specializing in senior illnesses, etc. advertise too.
I know there is a stigma to the day power AMs. But maybe there shouldn't be.

Isn't 1160am in Cicny making some money with a broad localized oldies format? Heck take 1320, 970 1410 or 620 and put a localized oldies format on with local jocks and play all the old stuff...Heck If such a deal could be put together let Clake Ingram program it!The station would sound greatIf this would be done you've got to find a sales staff that are as jazzed with the format as much as the air staff is. Sure you won't get top rate, but I'm sure alot of mom and pops would buy! ;D
