Uncle Dougie Gone?

Larimer Ave was still Italian, but just hanging on. Doo Wop is just one form of music. I realize it will not be a 24/7 format any more than Bluegrass or Dixieland Swing. I don't see that one night a week on an AM station that programs Adult Standards and the Carpenters should heve any problem continuing this show with somebody else. The Beatles didn't kill Doo Wop-------the culprit was Frankie Avalon!

I really expect that he's done in this market. His show just became the same thing over and over and over again. He hasn't bothered shopping anything to anyone just yet. Wants to "clear his head."

My parents are of the doo wop era and are in their late 60s/early 70s. Listened to it on the Philco radio in Dad's '56 Fairlane.

Even in this market where it still has a draw there isn't enough interest to put it fulltime on an AM or FM. Might be OK as a channel on Sirius or XM but that's about as far as it goes.

Doug was notified Tuesday that his contract was not being renewed and he was not going back on the air. He was not pleased with the decision and let his feelings be known in no uncertain terms. Dougie blistered some paint off the walls on the way out.

That's funny, talked to a few people and noone even knew he left the building. So much for "blistering the paint". Douggie is done, no if's and's or but's about it. He should've seen it coming with the numbers he was getting. He got stale and while there was a small core of listeners out there looking for something like him, that core was still way too small to bring in ANY advertisers during his time slot.

You know, I'd love to see what the download rates were on the podcasts. That's how I listened to Doug, since I was at work when he was live.

I just about died when they finally decided to provide his and Lynn's shows as podcasts. I remember in Nov. 2005 trying to set my computer up to record the live stream of their shows while I was at work, then saving as podcasts that I could listen to on my iPod. It never did work. I was in heaven, though, when WPTT finally did it for us.

But they never tried to monetize the podcast-side. Makes me wonder if they just didn't know how, or if it wasn't worth it because there weren't enough people subscribing. The least they could have done is keep the ads in the recordings instead of taking them out before posting each episode. Then up the advertising price just a bit to catch those of us who have to listen via recording rather than live.

Then again, I'm 25 and probably the only one who listened to Doug who knows what 'podcasts' are...

Undresses Monster,

I listened to Doug's show via podcast as well. I know other people downloaded the podcast and listened during work, driving home etc. It was the way to go especially since WPTT's signal strength can be compared to a walkie-talkie. It would of been neat to know how many downloads per day Doug's show got. I thought Doug was arrogant when I met him in person and his show was going stale, but I don't think his show was THAT bad in ratings to be pulled off of WPTT. I feel bad for him going out on the wrong foot being a broadcasting legend in Pittsburgh, not like he can go to a any smaller Pittsburgh station now, especially since he is older and will be hurting for income, etc. But I guess thats the radio business, no guarantees.

Oh, Doug is arrogant to be sure. I'd considered going in for one of Friday's "Doug and the Group" segments, but I'm sure I'd be blasted by him as another nitwit 20-something. He regularly ticked me off by being so impatient with his callers. You'd think someone who begged for callers so often would be more gracious with the callers' time and input when they actually did call. But no, he hung up on them prematurely.

All that aside, I love his shows with Lawrence (even if they are the same every time), and I love his talk about everyday life. It's a niche that no one else holds in this market, and too bad for Renda if they want to go for the bigger fish. Lord knows that they'll lose in that battle, since everyone else is going for the bigger fish, too.

Thank god for Lynn Cullen - otherwise my podcast cache would be empty most of the time.

Doo Wop once a week on a station that programs Adult Standards/Soft AC all week is not a format change as such. I live in Florida and listened to Doug every Sunday. WJAS is a 5,000 AM station that seems to do well against the odds. Again, nobody is suggesting a major FM outlet change to doo wop. Just bring it back Sunday nights on 'JAS.

undressedmonster,

I went in for his group once when he had a panel of 'younger people' and he tried to corner me on several occasions but I was able to outsmart him on some things. It was a blast though, but man, he asked me everything under the sun to like personal questions to my opinions on political and religious issues. I was surprised, it wasn't a soft interview with his guests! LOL. Had fun though....

Is Jim Dudas still playing the Mon Valley Memories on Sunday night? I know he included a good chunk of Doo-Wop. I did a Doo-Wop show here in DFW for over 5 years and in it's final book, in 2002, we were #4 25-54!! That said, I agreed with the decision to end it because of the demos involved.
Also, I was sorry to hear about Doug Hoerth. Back in the 'Alfred E. Newman' days at B-94, when I was doing 10p-2A, I used to stop for dinner at the Eat 'N Park on Banksville and I'd see Doug there doing the same thing. Eventually, I introduced myself and we had some really great chats. Before that, I'd heard that Doug wasn't all that friendly at times, but you'd never know it by me. He has my best wishes....

Jim Dudas is still on WJPA on Sundays, playing all the stuff that no one else does. He'll even play the Fenways/Racket Squad, which RD Summers won't include on 3WS.

I think Jim did his Top 100 countdown over New Year's. A station like 'JPA can still get away with that because they're not selling ratings.

Is Chuck Brinkman still on the air in Dallas?

Yes, he is. He'll be on this afternoon at some point on "Legends 770" KAAM. Starting soon, he'll be doing Thursday and Friday evenings as well as Saturday and Sunday afternoons...and, they DO stream. I spent a great deal of time with him and his family over the holidays and he's doing just fine.
