"Uncle Fred" Horton passes

Sorry to read on allaccess.com yesterday that Uncle Fred Horton, a Syracuse guy, has passed away. He was a longtime friend. I first met him when he was a promo man for Atlantic Records back in the early 70s. While he worked the record business for a time, Radio was his first love. I know he spent some time at WCMF & WBBF in Rochester, Y-94 in Syracuse (Saturday Oldies Show), WGNA in Albany, WTRY in Troy, WYNY in New York and several others over the years.

Fred was a good guy with plenty of passion for radio and a pretty strong list of stations on his resume. God bless him!

Yes, It's truly sad about Fred. I worked for him twice. WRUN/KG104 and WBBF/WBEE. - Both very enjoyable experiences. I got to work with a radio genius. I have stayed in touch with him over the years. There may not be a memorial service planned by the family. If anyone is interested in planning one please let me know. Syracuse would be the th place to have it, but where?

I am Fred Horton's daughter. It is so nice to read so many things about him and how great he was. My dad LIVED radio!! I remember as a young girl watching him work on jingles, playlists and loving every minute of it!! I just wanted you all to know that services are being planned and will be in Syracuse. If anyone wantes further details I can be reached by e-mail. Thanks

It's the lead story of NERW this week. As Scott Fybush said, it's rare that you start the week's roundup with an obituary.

Services will be at 1 PM Saturday (3/15) at Calvary Chapel in Liverpool. The Post-Standard has full details.

I had the pleasure of working for Fred Horton at WSYR-AM from 1982-1984. Simply put, Fred was not only an exceptionally skilled programmer and an utterly dedicated radio professional, but also a profoundly great guy. There are too many great events to which he was central, in my early broadcast career, to enumerate here; suffice it to say that few people were as focused and talented in his profession as he was. Fred was a guest in my home on a few occasions; it was always a great time and I will miss him, as our industry will miss his insight, enthusiasm and unshakable dedication.
He will always be "on the air" as far as I'm concerned.

When Fred was programming WRUN I was a jock at WFGL in Fitchburg MA which was under common ownership and Fred was tapped as our programming consultant. One summer I drove out to Utica and spent most of one day with Fred. He made a huge impression on me. In addition to sharing his limitless programming philosopies he also treated me to lunch. Rarely have I known such a down to Earth guy in this business. There is no doubt he left his mark on many others. One little known fact, in Fitchburg we knew him as "Father Fred," rather than "Uncle," as he was much like a father figure to us. And I have one hilarious outtake of him cutting liners that out of decency needs to stay in the can! Rest in peace. We miss you.

At WRUN he was known as Mr. Fred. I think the Mr. came about because there was another Fred (Miller) already at the station.
