Uncle Lar now gets NAB Respect

Retired 'Superjock' Lujack calls latest Hall of Fame induction long overdue

Larry Lujack, the larger-than-life "Superjock" who redefined radio in Chicago, has been selected for induction in the National Association of Broadcasters' Hall of Fame.

Official ceremonies in April at the 2008 NAB Show in Las Vegas will put him in the company of some of the greatest names in American radio, such as Edward R. Murrow, Paul Harvey, Ronald Reagan, Arthur Godfrey, Larry King, Rush Limbaugh and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

[EDIT]

True to form, Lujack reacted to the latest news with his unique brand of weary cynicism.

"As this will be my third and probably last Hall of Fame induction, I've decided, in my acceptance speech, to dump the phony gracious and fake humility bit and just be truthful for a change," he said Tuesday.

"I was, still am and always will be incredibly good, and frankly, I'm more than a little disappointed that it took the NAB this long to recognize that fact!

Lujack (of course) was also with KJR-AM Seattle in the 60's

Excellent! I woke up to Animal Stories every single weekday growing up in Chicago, in fact I still have Animal Stories Volumes One and Two on vinyl!

Isn't CD #1 the one with the ant-eater episode?!?! I think there are now 5 or 6 CD's out of Animal Stories with Uncle Lar and Lil' Snot Nose Tommy.

I honestly don't remember, and I don't have it with me now so I can't confirm or deny, but #1 does have the infamous bit about the prize-winning holstein Contented Linda Grace, and one of my all-time favorites...Mike the headless rooster.

There are five volumes of Animal Stories now, but I have yet to get to the latest installment.

Larry was the reason I got into the biz...and I will never, ever forgive him.

;)

A little talk with Uncle Lar on a school "snow day" in 1976 was one of the first major reality checks that
KEPT me out of radio, though it still wasn't enough to keep me out of radio eng. school.

I think his wry cynicism is the perfect mirror to Chicago's attitude, which is why he is Superjock.

I'm pretty sure there were only three LPs, so there might be "new" material on cds 4,5,6.

I can't remember if the live segment of animal stories was 10:45 or 7:45?
I seem to remember the live segment was at 10:45 AM when Lar handed over the show to Tommy, and
the previous day's segment ran at 7:45 AM.

It was that sarcasm, that world-weariness, and of course that wit that what hooked this then-elementary school students ears to the radio every weekday morning...and yes it certainly reflected the attitude of many Chicagoans.

I thought there were three original vinyl albums as well, but during an e-correspondence I had going with someone at the Animal Stories mail order dealie I learned there were only two. Those two of course are on CD now, along with three other cd's of newer material.

Yes, the first-run episode would air during Tommy's shift, with the replay happening the next day during Uncle Lar, but the actual times they aired escape me.

Anyone here know for sure?

I was sure I have 3 LP volumes! I will go and check and verify about the cuts on Vol 1.

I had journalism class 2 years during 10 to 11, and as photog, I was able to listen to WLS in the darkroom, so I heard many segments twice.

Lar's favorite rock-n-roll song, by his description on a recent WLS AM afternoon visit: Love comes in Spurts by Throbbing Gristle.
The worst rock-roll song by early-AM announcement one day in late 1970's: Ninety-Six Tears by Question Mark and the Mysterians.
