UNCONFIRMED: Ed Brantley OUT at WIVK

Rumor on the street is that Citadel has let go longtime personality and WIVK GM Ed Brantley....
I'm sure we'll see soon if this is really so...

So what's the message here?

Citadel is running out of pennies...

Shitadel is running out of pennies alright. Can you imagine a radio station with no GM. I worked at one one time. Total KAOS! CC is starting to look better everyday with the choices being CUMULUS AND SHITADEL :'(

Ed was a good guy. As for his company, they are just firing those who make big dollars and he was one with a target on his back.

No gm says Hammmmonnnd can run wild.... until they drop the hammer on him also.
Sad that the top station in the East fires a guy on a THURSDAY after he kept them up up there for how many decades?

Wonder what kind of severance, if any, Ed might have gotten?
Is there a non-compete for a fired man? Retirement or VO's?

What station wouldn't like to have a guy like him on their staff?
The Money Question is, could they afford him?

Best wishes to you Ed. Been a helluva ride over the years!!

In today's economy, Ed was too old and too highly paid to survive. It's a sign of the times. Time to retire and spend some of that money you've made over the years or fly off into the sunset! Bye...bye!

This is so true. It's happening in almost every industry. Big problem for a lot of 50+ men who have been loyal employees. Now they can't find jobs because employers want the young, radio included.

Maybe this DOES happen and I just never hear about it, but are such dismissals EVER preceded with, "We'll keep you if you're willing to take a pay cut" ? If an employee has always been good for the company, this would seem like a better comprimise that outright firing them.

WIVK hasn't had a bad book ever. Sure they had periods of being lazy and taking it for granted.
But at times it just looks easy because nobody can touch them.
So he seems expendable.

We'll see.

Sort of flying that Delta jet from Atlanta to LA. I'd rather have an old overpaid pilot flying, even if the computer is doing most of the work, rather than a $30,000 a year 25 year old they hired cheap from the feeder airline, ASA.

We don't value experience anymore and while every at WIVK is older than many staffs, it's a sign that experience doesn't matter.

What happens when the listeners figure out everybody is serving left over. Does nobody have wisdom that all of this is ending it all.
Talk to anybody in Nashville now. In times of a crisis listeners find out if radio has a clue and can deliver vital information. Nope. Radio there sucks. TV killed them. Radio was doing their weekend shows with nimblewits called board ops running it.
You think radio listeners didn't notice?

Must be in the water at Citadel, I got the boot from them on Wednesday, the 5th. It really sucked too cause I got no warning. Now I hear the station was flipped to a format I worked in for quite some time. They let me go, but kept the other dude that was the PD. No justice. To my knowledge I don't think he worked in CHR at all before now. I heard they even are gonna put him on the air doing a shift!! Why they wouldn't just keep me and let him go cause I guarantee he made more money and I have more on air experience. Oh well, off to dust off my resume and look at a new career. Any suggestions???

You might try a public relations firm. I know “Skinny” Bobby Harper in Atlanta (WKRP Cincinnati’s real life inspiration) was spokes person for MARTA the local mass transit in Atlanta.

Am I the only one who can connect the dots? Citadel is going to cut loose 100.3. Citadel canned Ed Brantley. If I was “stuck” with 100.3 who do you think I would be calling! Of course you would half to build new studios (I personally have built a studio in 5 days) and wait out any non compete. There are a lot of out of work radio people around staffing should be no trouble. Ed might even work for a discount just to mess with Citadel. You can send my consulting fee just cantact me via this board.

Ok, that was a good effort.

But if you had actually connected the dots you would have arrived at the finding that they let him go so they could alleviate any future entanglement. The company is in bankruptcy. When the judge approves the final reorganization plan this week, a new company will emerge and that company will most likely hire him as their local GM. This move allowed the current company to remove him and his options from their petition.

Likewise nice, boogiecheck.

However, Mr. Brantley's options have likely been underwater for years. As a result, they're irrelevant to everyone. Any new company would find the Knoxville properties more valuable with at least one original key player still at the helm. Not much reason to suspect anything less than an extremely short term solution with extremely long term consequences.

A bigger question is: How many months will this look viable on paper before it shows up as the terrible corporate decision that it is?

An even bigger question: How many months is Citadel going to keep stroking out six figure rent checks for 100.3 before the short term benefit outweighs the long-term competitive advantage? And how long will 107.7 be able to stay dominant if 100.3 winds up in the hands of a deep-pocket competitor? I know they're few and far between, but they're out there.

I agree. I believe the owner of 100.3 has market experience and “deep pockets”. Even if 100.3 took only 20% of WIVK’s audience it would affect billings seriously. The ad agencies’ number cruncher buyers would notice and want discounted commercials. I am glad my pay check is not dependant on Citadel's "Vision" and foward thinking!

Ok, the next question is how many country stations do we need here before we all jump off the Henley Bridge? If 100.3 went this route, we would have FOUR country stations on FM not to mention the multitude of AM classic country stations. This probably would have been a good idea 4 or 5 years ago but it seems like overkill now.

Eh. If 100.3 were to go back to the Pirkle Bunch there would be three less country stations in the market in a matter of hours. Who wants to compete with the one station/programming team that successfully toppled the frog to begin this whole saga? If you'll remember, WOKI was climbing up the ratings and taking all kinds of money away from WIVK until they stepped up and stopped their bleeding with the LMA.
