Under Construction

So now rock 103 is under construction according to the promos they have been running. Do us a favor and put on somebody who knows rock and roll and dump the canned ham. It sounds ridiculous.

By regeneration do you mean format change...how about WREC-FM, Easy Listening 102.7 or Wolf County. Clear Channel doesn't have the will to take on the Max. Time turn tail and change the format any last ditch attempt is just painfully postponing the final outcome. It will be like watching a broken down mule run in the Kentucky Derby.

I can't help but think this is destined to become WREC-FM, that's really the only flip that makes sense. For some of the remaining Rock 103 listeners, they won't even bother to change the station...

It's about time they started some construction on 103....they started tearing it down about 4 or 5 years ago when Drake Zeke made their grand exit, then they broke up the Wake -Up Crew. From there it was one bonehead move after another.

What goes around...WREC-FM hit the air back in, what, 1965, and lasted till it changed to Great American Country, WZXR, about 1974.

I strongly believe that WREC will be on FM very soon.

Having been back in the day one of the corporate "suits" who wrestle with these type decisions, and having a lot of experience with this particular station and many others in Memphis, it's fun to play the guessing game as to what is likely to be the CC "play". Remember that WREC is arguably the best AM signal in the market, and that CC controls and WREC airs most of the really important national conservative content. Creating a viable conservative FM competitor without that national marquee content, is nearly impossible. The point is that CC doesnt really "have" to worry about a strong FM competitor so their only reason to use a full Class C to do N/T would be to reap whatever ratings and revenue lift they might realize from being on the more traveled, hipper FM band..... I'm not sure thats the play for them unless they see nothing else more desirable. It might end up with N/T being on the 98.9 signal but that would mean wobbly coverage out East where the format would naturally overperform..... It'll be fun to watch........ Craig Scott

Your logic with WREC is dead on. What would a corporte suite do with Rock 103? Change it to a new format? Fix it as a classic rock? Leave it alone and hope that Cumulus blows out Drake & Zeke to save money?

I know I've mentioned this before on the Memphis board but it bares repeating again: CC will put N/T on FM even when their AM has a great signal. They did it in Birmingham where their WERC (AM) has one of the more robust metro signals. In fact the FM they chose actually covers less of the metro than the AM did during daytime hours.

IIRC they're also putting WFLA in Tampa on translators despite the AM having a massive punch. I'm sure there are other markets where they're doing this. If they think they can outbill the current format with the growth in listenership to WREC, they may very well do it.

Regardless, the trend is definitely to put AM N/T on FM because AM is dying. Outside the realm of Clear Channel, it's happening at a rapid pace. WSB is on FM now, WBBM is on FM now, KCBS in on FM now… it goes on and on. The trend in almost every case is the same: The AM listeners quickly migrate to the FM signal unless they have no other choice, and they usually gain a share or six in the process.

Now to the voodoo: how about they put Radio Now on 102.7 and move WREC to 101.9? Drop the stereo carrier and suddenly the move in from Jonesboro becomes a pretty reliable signal where the money is. WREC gets on FM with a stick looking right at downtown and Now gets 100,000 watts and HD.

What say ye?

Good idea if Radio Now was a viable format. Their lack of ratings has little to do with power. Radio Now has been on the air over a year with NO significant ratings or more importanly revenue. Time to shoot both WEGR and KWNW. Tony Berringer if your out there time to make a change formats and the leadership.

You would really have to know the expectations CC has for Now. They know it doesn't city grade Germantown Pkwy and points east. They may be happy with it doing a poor job of flanking the Q and 100. It's being run on the cheap. The won't even spring for a real STL for it. Half of the station is not locally produced even. I'm sure they expected to do better with it.

Did anybody hear the big "Re-Launch" at noon today?.........(sounds of crickets chirping).......No? Buehler? Buehler? Well, it was the end of the "under construction" phase, which consisted of a three minute or so piece of production, songs, a ripoff of the Six Million Dollar Man intro, and some deep voiced guy saying this was a new day for classic rock. Then Paula is live (is is she voice-tracked?) from noon till now. Word has it that the morning guy starts tomorrow...some guy that used to be on air in Memphis that goes by the moniker of "Ditch".....won't that be exciting? It's a new day in Memphis radio!

NTS and CHR aren't viable formats? Clearly you're not in programming Molly. Top 40 stations are among the market leaders in nearly every top 50 city. From reading your earlier posts, you were obviously wronged by CC. I feel for you, mostly because I was a few years ago by one of the big companies. My advice to you would be suck it up and get back out there...move on. No need to slam people on a message board when you should be focused on more important things.

Now for NOW:

I live in Collierville and can rarely hear it. Their cume is 150k, and is close to Q1075. From what I remember when Q signed on, they've never had great numbers...just ok ones. I recently moved home from Virginia to go back to school, so i haven't listened to either station much. Other than the dominant urban stations, what reason is there for both Q and Now not being received? Fighting for a 2 share isn't exactly the dog fight going on in Tampa or other cities with multiple CHRs.

There is a status update on Facebook about Paula and Ditch being the hosts for the Ronald McDonald House Radiothon coming up soon. I hope it does well, but I have my doubts about it......it'll bear little or no resemblance to Radiothons past. Hopefully an onslaught of donations in memory of Bad Dog will put them over the hump.
