Underground/exploitation movies in the '70s...how big were they?

These are movies like I Spit on your Grave. How big of a reach were they and how integrated into the '70s as a whole were they? I know they were advertised in newspapers and weren't in suburban theatres, but outside that I think maybe drive ins had them.

I don't know about blaxploitation movies in general, but per

"Superfly,", the biggest blaxploitation movie ever, wound up with ticket sales of $18.2 million between 1972 and 1973. According to the same source, the film cost about $250,000 to make, meaning it earned a nice profit for the companies that produced and promoted it.
