underrated personalities

with the undying negativity on this board, I figured I'd actually give some praise to someone who I think deserves credit for being an excellent on air personality who really never gets mentioned on this board... JW from the morning show on country 102.5. That guy is funny and also incredibly sarcastic for a country station....anyone else have thoughts on who's underrated?

I've always thought Bob Stuart at the River is underrated. He's been there forever (I met him during my second tour of WLYT in the early 90's). A solid jock and a helluva nice guy.
Chuck Nowlin on ZLX also doesn't get a lot of respect. I used to listen to him on AAF (80's, right?) and he was always great.
Anyone know if Liz Solar is still on-air anywhere? Always thought she was excellent.

MIke Hsu From WAAF. HE is the best Music DJ in the city. He encompasses what a dj should have because he makes you think hes into the garble that most rock stations play these days. I worked with him for a bit and I know he likes linkin park and three days grace about as much as getting a root canal, but he makes you think he does and thats what its all aboot. He also taught me most of what I know about radio.

I also Love Neanderpaul, who many of you know from this board, and Is also number 1 in kansas city.

I agree with you about Hsu. Dan Justin is great...he always has been and I think that get lost being on WMJX.

I've always been a big Mike Hsu fan. He's quick, intelligent, and knows his stuff. Goes about his business the right way both professionally, and more importantly, personally. Mike is very talented.

I got to hear WZLX's Angelle Wood the last time I was in Boston, and she's also engaging, and made me want to hear what was up at the show she was broadcasting from.

Mark Hamilton from 'BCN is an incredibly underutilized resource for that station. Hamilton knows the product, and balances his musical credibility with the absolute right amount of Bostonian sarcasm that's woefully absent from a lot of "personality radio."

John Laurenti knew his stuff at WHJY & WBOS. I haven't heard him on the new station. But Laurenti has the same thing Hamilton has. It's actually a bummer that he had to move on. What are they doing with WBOS now?

All of the above make listening to their respective stations more engaging. And IMHO, that is what we're supposed to do.

Not familiar with him, & what WAAF plays is not my cup of tea, but I agree that one of the characteristics that makes for a good jock is the ability to make it sound as if they're completely into the music & lifestyle (even, if they aren't). I cringe when I hear a jock put down or make snide remarks about the music a station plays, or make it obvious that they're way out of the demo. Listeners tune in because they like what you play, if you can't make it sound like you do too you're in the wrong line of work.

Laurenti doesn't have a regular airshift at 'UMB, he's the Music Director and artist live interview coordinator, and he does fill-ins. They're fundraising now, and he's been doing a lot of pitching for pledges with the hosts.

WBOS is now completely jockless automated (with the one exception of George Knight's weekend morning "Over Easy" show). The format is "Classic Alternative", heavy on the mainstream end of the early '90s "grunge" era (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Guns'n'Roses, etc...) with a smattering of "classic new wave" (Police, Heads, Costello, etc...), and a bit of newer stuff. Although I like some of the music, the format sounds so contrived, generic and faceless to me that I don't listen. That's not what radio is about, to me.

This is the same JW that worked on WZOU back in the '80's? I think we also used to work on WERZ in Exeter, NH.

Mike Hsu is by far THE best on air personality in the market. Quick...smooth...and goddamn funny!

I second the praise for Kenny Young. Best night host on a music station in Boston!

Bob Hannah!
Play me some Saving Abel!

I was vacationing in Boston visiting the family a few months back, and my buddies and I kept calling Bob requesting Saving Abel (local band from Memphis area now w/a couple singles). He took it in stride and had a great time w/us calling him and demanding that we hear 'Addicted'.

Good times.

I personally believe the best on-air talent can always be found @ 91.3 WXPL...FITCHBURG STATE COLLEGE RADIO!
You're Explosive Alternative! (I had to give a shout out to my 1st radio station)
