I stole this from the Boston board but who do you think is underrated in the market in terms of just not getting any kudos or maybe even capable of making a big move if he or she wanted to? I think Jim Shorts on the HJY morning show is. He's very witty and is kind of the anti Paul/Al/Skidmarks. Kinda like the one designated driver in the group. Also Neal White on Fun 107. He does weekend in Boston anyway but is one of the best sounding people on the radio including those in Providence and could probably make a big market jump if he really wanted to.
 
They don't any better than Steve Mac/Jim Shorts. Had the opportunity at one point to be the full time sports guy on the Imus show. He blew it off to stay in RI and has never had any regrets. True professional and great guy on and off the radio. I bet even on this board noone could come up with one negative about him.

Since we are talking Fall River, can we include Boston as well? I always thought Matty from Kiss was by far the best local personality who should have had a Nationally syndicated program. In my opinion, he's that good! I used to work with people in Warwick who would always tune him in. Warwick is at the outer fringe of the signal, but they loved the guy. I think he could have worked on a National level.

If I'm not mistaken, his show WAS briefly syndicated to a handful of stations some years ago. It wasn't that many stations and it didn't last that long (maybe 6-9 months or so?).
 
I remember that Matty was on Hot 106 in Providence for a while. So it looks like a few New England stations carried him. But I believe local affiliates butchered the show by adding to many local elements such as their own music and lots of cut ins. That could have led to it's early demise. If you are going to air a syndicated show you need to leave it alone.
 
There's enough syndication in Providence without adding a successful guy who is basically a Boston phenomenon. If Clear Channel thought he'd be successful in syndication he'd be there. They don't. He isn't. This is about Providence people. Someone who makes millions is hardly underrated.

Well I had to go to Boston to make my point because I honestly can't pick anybody in Providence who fits the bill. I guess there is some Ok talent out there, but nobody I can pinpoint to go onto greater things. I always liked Geoff Charles. When I first heard his personality driven show 20 years ago on WPRO I thought he would be the local Howard Stern. He was awsome! But somewhere along the way he lost steam. He's still good, but he doesn't have that same fire he once had. Everyone else in Providence seems pretty generic if you ask me. I've since turned to satellite radio and listen to lots of out of market stations as well simply because I enjoy them more.
 
I would have to add Tony Bristol although truly underrated would mean those in the industry don't give the person enough credit and that may not be the case.At one point he programmed three stations.Now he's down to two and has help but he's probably doing the best that can be done considering shrinking staffs and budgets.Comparing to other Providence programmers Scott Laudani programs HJY and the station pretty much repeats itself year after year which isn't bad but it doesn't take a genius to keep it afloat.Programming Coast and B101 is like being the mayor of a ghost town.
 
Tony Bristol is doing the best that can be done considering he has no competition with Pro-FM. Top 40 is ripe for the taking in Provi.

With all the music alternatives available to listeners I think it's about 5 years too late for anyone to try toppling PRO-FM. Coast now seems to be there as an alternative but they never proved capable of being much of an alternative to Lite Rock 105 which pretty much rolls along effortlessly so I doubt they're much of a threat to PRO-FM. IMHO it's just a matter of shuffling female listeners in a younger demo around when it comes to Coast's audience. Time will tell if Seacrest is any kind of a threat. I view most syndicated shows on music stations to be cost cutting measures more than anything else. In Ryan's case it's just cost cutting with a mega-name person already known by listeners in any market. The closest scenario when it comes to a hot ac trying to nibble at a chr's audience is KISS vs MIX in Boston and there's really not much of a contest there. Ironically in that case MIX is a very good example of a hot ac. Coast is not. It takes more than the music to make you part of the format and other than the music Coast is not-so-hot.
