UNID progressive talk and CBS news stations on 1450

Since mid-November in San Antonio, the AM band has been opening up as early as 3:45 CT at times, During that pre-sunset time, I’ve heard a couple of talk stations I can’t ID. One airs progressive/liberal talk and what I presume is the Thom Hartmann show plus ads for his book “Screwed.” I’ve only heard the station a few times, and it’s never in for long, (I suspect it’s to my east, but I’ve only heard it on the car radio.)

The Thom Hartmann website states that the show airs noon to 3 p.m. ET, which is earlier than what I’ve been hearing. It also lists two affiliates on 1450 (WVAX in VA and KPTR in CA), but they no longer exist on that frequency.

The other station I’m not able to ID is coming from the east or northeast and airs long stretches of CBS news talk. However, on Sundays I’ve heard it air the Garden America show or news talk with references to Radio America, News Talk Radio, and Liberty Nation. (This could be multiple stations.) This station has a better signal than the one mentioned above and hangs around longer.

Anyone have a clue as to what these stations might be? (I know it’s not my semi-local KCTI, which has been silent for months.)

The only progressive talk station I can find on 1450 is WRCE in Richland Center, WI. It airs the Thom Hartmann show but earlier in the day. Also, I can’t find any stations on 1450 airing CBS news podcasts or any of those other programs/radio networks.

Mystery solved. It turned out to be one station on 1450 airing both the Thom Hartmann and CBS news shows - KCYL in Lampasas, TX, 107 miles NE of me.

After mutiple times of hearing snatches of these shows but never an ID, I recently heard an ad during the Thom Hartmann show referencing Goldthwaite, which is in the fringe listening area of KCYL. A call to the station confirmed that they air the Thom Hartmann and CBS news shows.

I never considered KCYL because I thought it was just a classic country station. Turns out that they do still play classic country, but they also have a lot of talk shows.

I wouldn’t have expected a left of center talk show on a country AM in Lampasas, but DXing is full of surprises.
