Unidentified 1610 AM Reception

Around 7:30 CT last night, I heard 60's rock and roll playing on 1610 AM. There was no talking between songs and the signal was fairly weak. At 8:15 the music stopped and Spanish language was spoken. I heard no more music, only talking. I lost the signal around 8:30.

I'm in central Louisiana and the signal was the strongest from the South-Southwest. I would normally think this would mean Mexico, but the music didn't make sense.

I understand there are no commercial US broadcasters on this frequency. Could the music be from an unlicensed broadcaster. I don't know if the music and talking were from the same source. I could find nothing online to explain it. Does anyone have any idea what I was hearing?

Most likely CHHA Toronto. They do have Spanish language programming. As far as I know there are no Mexican stations on 1610 any longer.

As CADXER noted, there are no longer any Mexico stations on 1610. CHHA is primarily a Spanish-language station, and they have some programs in other languages as well.

Cadxer and jim-satx,

Thank you! CHHA makes sense with the way my radio was oriented. I just assumed SSW instead of NNE because I'v picked up several other stations in Mexico. Also, was not aware CHHA was Spanish language.

This would be my most distant DX so far. Will try this frequency again tonight.

I have never heard Rock music on CHHA, although I have heard some English language programming. CHHA operates at 6.3 kW directional, beamed West to avoid the 1610 allotment 1610CJWI in Montreal, QC.

Since no stations operate on 1610 in the US except TIS stations, CHHA has a de facto Class A signal in the nearby areas. CBE/CBEF 1550 Windsor, ON and CKDO 1580 Oshawa, ON have similar signals.

Schoedingers Cat,

I heard about 45 minutes of non-stop 60's rock. There was no station identification or anything other than music. Is it possible this was someone making an unlicensed broadcast and I heard CHHA after the unlicensed station shut down?

According to the CHHA website, they have English programs 8-9 ET, switching to Italian at 9 on Sundays. Their schedule shows "Meditation Station" on Sundays, which probably wouldn't be rock music, but you never know.

I've heard CHHA a few times here in Houston, so it's certainly doable.

Just verified CHHA with their online stream. Thank you everyone for the helpful information! Now, if only the rock and roll will return...
