Union soccer games on 610 WIP-AM

I don't even know where to begin with this. Why would KYW carry the games of a team that nobody really cares about?
Because more people listen to KYW, than WIP-am

Ah, Julius, I thought you LIKED KYW. Why would they want to drive away all of their listeners for a few hours by airing a sporting event no one cares to hear?

KYW carried the Phillies for one season. Did not repeat that for obvious reasons. You drive away listeners who want to hear your product. KYW is the most listened to AM station because they do not make stupid decisions, like airing soccer!

I am not happy that WIP hasn't aired a Union game yet. It doesn't make any sense. Why did WIP sign a contract with the Union to carry their games in the first place. I really wished that KYW would make a sacrifice and start carrying all of their games for the rest this season and beyond. I wouldn't mind if they did that. At least the team will get major exposure on a major radio station like 1060.

How would traffic on the 2s work? Would they have a 3rd person in the booth to do traffic reports every 10 minutes between the shouts of Gooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllllll?

I actually listened to the game last night. About 20 minutes of it. The announcers, whoever they were, seemed to me to be doing a good job.

They kept it fast paced and told everything. In recent years I have had problems with the Phillies' radio PBP guys who do not remember they are not on TV. We cannot see the game, so they need to be more descriptive. That was not a problem with the Union game.

Actually the Yankees on WCBS/880 are in this situation. However CBS also owns WINS/1010 so they tell people to tune there for news & traffic updates while the Yankees are on.

Also the Yankees are, well, the Yankees. They are not the Philadelphia Union. :)

Also interesting: WCBS keeps its format alive for the internet stream while the Yankees are playing. If you want the WCBS flavor of news, traffic and weather, and not the WINS flavor, you can hear it online (at all the various places WCBS streams).

WCBS-AM cannot carry the games on-line. For that, you need to pay MLB. Same for WPHT. On-air only.

Yes, I know. The point of my post is that WCBS still carries *live and local* news programming on the internet feed even while baseball is on the air. The internet stream while the Yankees are playing is the same as the radio station when they are not. They do (and pay for) live and local news rather than do what other MLB flagships do - air something that aired on the radio earlier in the day, or something off a satellite.

To save money, they could just simulcast WINS instead of WCBS news online only. When WPHT had Rush, they aired that on the stream during a Phillies game. They did do the local top of the hour newscast just like they were broadcasting over the air. Did MAS' local 1 hour on 1210 ever get pre-empted by the Phillies? What did 1210 stream for that hour?

I think people may be underestimating soccer on radio. WIP-AM's sister station in Boston, WBZ-FM, airs New England Revolution soccer matches. As far as the Philadelphia Union is concerned, you have a team that draws 18,000+ fans to PPL Park in Chester. Granted, we're not talking about filling Lincoln Financial Field, but there is a niche market of fans who support the Union and MLS. I'm in no way saying that the Union on WIP-AM will draw huge ratings; I don't think that's the intent. But, at least it gives them a stable radio outlet, unlike certain other minor league sports in the city (see: the arena football league Philadelphia Soul).
