United Cable - New Britain, CT - August 1989

I was going through a drawer of items which belonged to my late grandfather. I found the remote control to his old camcorder/VHS Hi-Fi Camcorder, which docked into a cable/tv receiver to act like a VCR. Anyways, he had a cable lineup sticker on the back of it. It was the lineup for then-United Cable of New Britain, CT and it was dated as August 1989.

2- WFSB (CBS) channel 3 Hartford
3- EPG Program Guide
4- WVIT (NBC) channel 30 New Britain

7- ESPN
8- WTNH (ABC) channel 8 New Haven
9- WWOR (IND) channel 9 Secaucus, NJ/New York City
10- USA
11- WPIX (IND) channel 11 New York City
12- CVN [Cable Value Network]
13- TNT
14- HBO
15- The Movie Channel
16- Showtime
17- TBS SuperStation
18- WHCT (IND) channel 18 Hartford

43- Disney Channel
45- Movietime

NOTES: We didn't get an expanded lineup here until sometime in 1993. The channels jumped from (I think) 46 to 99 at that time. An FM stereo service was still offered for some channels, although I doubt it had any use by then. NESN (New England Sports Network) and Disney were pay services at that time.

WWOR was eventually replaced with their EMI-Eastern Microwave Service. The Syndex rules would knock WPIX off of the lineup by July 1990. They were replaced by WTWS-TV (IND) channel 26 of New London, CT. Today they are ION affiliate WHPX-TV/DT. WHCT was forced off the air in 1991. Today they are Univision affiliate WUVN-TV/DT. WTXX is now our CW affiliate. WCTX-TV/DT (MY) channel 59 of New Haven didn't sign on until 1995.

Coming back to 2009, the only channels still on the same channels today are WFSB [cable 2], WVIT [cable 4] and WTNH [cable 8].

When did it leave full time? If you meant that, I don't know. From what I can remember, they were still on our system in 1995 when UPN started. The 8 to 10 PM block would be blacked out by then-TCI Cablevision, despite there not really being a UPN affiliate here when they started. WTXX-TV channel 20 only started carrying UPN programming in 1996. I always thought it was odd since it was network programming and not syndication. How could WTXX or any other Connecticut TV station claim non-duplication if nobody carried UPN for the first year?

As for older cable lineups, I was told that United Cable even carried channel 5 from New York and channel 22 from Springfield, MA once. WGBY-DT (PBS) is the only out-of-market station we presently receive here. [WGBY-TV channel 57 analog is already off the air.]

WSBK left the line-up full-time in the late 90s, though they'd pop it on over the Shop-At-Home Network for Bruins games. Of course WSBK no longer carries the Bruins.

Yeah WNYW was on the lineup at one time. I remember crying as a little boy when I turned on Channel 5 to watch my favorite cartoons only to find CNN instead.

New Britain got the expanded cable in 93. I live in Bristol and we didn't get it until 96. All of a sudden there were 75 channels.

I don't know... At that time, this would still be considered a "learning channel" 24/7... ;D
