Universal Sports is now on DIRECTV

Universal Sports is now on DIRECTV channel 625 24/7. Will be on the Sports Pack and other packages higher than the chioce packages around in August.

Universal Sports Network has inked a multiyear, multiplatform distribution pact with DirecTV.
Under the deal, the network will launch on a free preview basis to all of the No. 1 DBS provider's 19.4 million customers by early August. Universal Sports, which presents an array of Olympic-related sports, will then become part of DirecTV's Sports Pack, and other select packages -- placement on which have not yet been finalized -- on Oct. 1.

It's been available for a few days now and here are my comments on it:
1. The picture quality is TERRIBLE! Its not in HD, its encoded in SD. However, the picture looks worse than most of the SD channels on DTV
2. The channel should be called Universal "Sports", these would be the sporting events ESPN 9 would be showing if there ever was an ESPN 9
3. There's really no true need for the network on DTV. It's a digital subchannel for a reason.

For that reason, I would rather that Universal Sports be available as part of the standard packages, at least in markets where Universal Sports is available terrestrially.

I wonder how many clamored for the addition of Universal Sports to DTV...;)

Why hasn't DIRECTV been very interested in carrying local digital subchannels? For us DIRECTV subs in the LA area, DTV carries KLCS-DT2 (which is PBS Kids) but that's about the only digital subchannel they offer. I know a lot of local cable companies offer some digital subchannels on their systems, why not satellite? Not enough bandwidth I assume?

Very good question could be the bandwidth in each city of the TV Market. Here in Tallahassee Florida we have ABC,PBS,FOX,NBC,CBS,CW. The one channel is not on DIRECTV Tallahasseee List is My Network TV as that is on WCTV-DT 2 and DIRECTV wont carry that on there. But I hread alot of people wanted
WCTV-DT2 to be add but DIRECTV doesnt want to do it so.

Not enough bandwidth is probably one of the reasons but another reason is 98% of these subchannels carry the same programming schedule, other than commercials and some carrying local programming (or mixing networks together, like a MyNet/Retro type timeshare). I know, reason would tell you to upload one feed and make it available to those markets that have an affiliate, but the FCC hasn't required carrying subchannels yet.

In Chicago, around the time of pre-transitional digital, DirecTV picked up WWME-CA (now WWME-LD as WWME-CA is still analog, & currently broadcasting The U Too), but actually didn't want to pick it up. WWME-LD was MeTV for just Chicago, but is now the national MeTV. DirecTV has since refused to add MeToo (now the local MeTV) on WMEU-LD, along with The U Too (MeToo & The U Too are locally programmed). With WTTW, they refuse to carry WTTW Prime, which is locally programmed with PBS & APT programming that would typically air in prime time at anytime. Since WTTW devotes most of their programming schedule, during the week to children's programming, they're exempt from showing children's programming on WTTW Prime. To Me, it's sad that the main channel outside of children's programming is poorly programmed.

As for the people who sell DirecTV service, they get mad at me that I tell them I still need an antenna to get the channels they refuse to carry. They tell me that I don't need an antenna, & that they carry all local channels. I tell them that they carry the main channel, but not the subchannels. They insisted that they carry all local channels. When I tell them that I need WTTW Prime. They're like "You mean WTTW! We carry that." I say say I need WTTW Prime, & it's not the same WTTW channel that you carry. They say we have WTTW. There is no WTTW Prime. I tell the guy that he has no clue about OTA TV. When I watch WTTW, I'm watching WTTW Prime on 11.2 a lot more than WTTW on 11.1. The store I was at even had a pc linked to the internet, & I even pulled up the WTTW website. It showed stuff on their site to WTTW Prime, & the sales person still wanted to deny that the channel existed. Same with WCIU. That sales person was mad at me that I refused to sign up. I said "I would sign up when I have the money for the service, & that I only sign up from a sales person that actually knows about the service". I had better knowledge about the service than the salesman did. As it stands, I probably won't sign up for DirecTV anytime soon. I hate Dish Network's lineup, & I find the sales people for Dish network even worse than DirecTV.

At least DirecTV carries Mhz Worldview (also available OTA on PBS & independent non-commercial stations), Qubo, Ion Life (both I watch occasionally, & already available OTA to me), WGN America (something I don't get now because I'm in the Chicago market, & not available to Chicagoland viewers, except for satellite), & PBS East & West.
